🍎 Alphabet / Sound rings

As of this week, we will have completed our learning of the letters / single sounds of the alphabet.

If you are missing any letters on your alphabet / sound rings (and you want the complete set), please check the ring in your child's book pocket and let us, know via the yellow reading logs, which letters you need.

-We revise the singular sounds every day in our classrooms. Please ensure that you revise the sounds at home. It is important that students know the isolated, singular sounds, before we move on to learning about digraphs (two letters that make one sound, like 'sh').

Decodable Texts

We now have some decodable books as apps that should be downloaded to your child's iPad. These books are a great resource to use at home for home reading. They are called 'Pip and Tim' and 'Wizz Kid'. Please begin at stage 1 and move on from there. Remember re-reading the same book helps with fluency.

CURRICULUM

📚 Reading

Students will read decodable words and texts, using their knowledge of sounds to blend and segment words. We will look at some 'irregular' words, and discuss the parts of the word that need to be learnt 'by heart'.

Students will also revise letters / sounds which look / sound similar like B and D.

What can you do at home?

-Help your child to read their 'take home' book each night

-Explore the Reading Eggs library and Fast Phonics to read decodable texts

-Make words with your sound cards and practise continuous blending

-Continue to revise the sounds on the sound/letter rings

📝 Writing

Students will write about concepts related to the Big Idea of 'Country'. Our mentor text this week is Saltie Mumma, which is all about crocodiles. This text includes a fictional story on one side of the page, and information text on the other side of the page. Students will write an information text in the form of a 'can, have, are' chart, and they will also write a short fiction sentence about a crocodile.

What can you do at home?

-Engage in fine motor tasks such as sorting, threading, writing, colouring, making, building, play dough and painting

-Reinforce correct entry and exit points for letters if your child writes at home

-Practise lower case letter formations on the app 'red writing'

🔡 Phonics

Our phonics focus this week is learning about the letters 'q', 'x, 'y' and 'z'. They will learn their sounds and the cued articulation. They will also use these sound to write and read CVC* words such as 'zip', 'fox' and 'yes'.

(*Consonant - Vowel - Consonant)

What can you do at home?

-Ask: show me the cued articulation for 'q', 'x, 'y' and 'z'

-Find words with 'q', 'x, 'y' and 'z' in their take home books (or any others)

-Log onto Reading Eggs and try 'Fast Phonics' to practise letters and sounds

🔢  Maths

As it is Teddy Bear Week, we will have maths learning all about teddies! We will be revising skills such as measuring, capacity and pattern. Preps will also explore counting, using teddies of course!

What can you do at home?

-Count collections and record how many

-Practise writing numbers the right way (Red Writing App is great for this too)

🌏 CBL - Country

We are exploring one of our Guiding Question - How does the environment affect life on Country? - and we will learn about the seasons on Wurundjeri Country. Did you know - we are currently in wombat season! Waring Wombat Season is from April to July. There are misty mornings followed by cool, rainy days. In this season, wombats emerge to bask and graze in the sunshine.

💻 Friendology

Students will learn about the Friendology 'Friendship Facts'. This session anchors students in the ‘truths’ of friendship so that they have realistic expectations. Students learn what respect looks and sounds like in their friendships.
