Pathways Update

Trevor and Johnny (both Class of 2016)

Pathways Newsletter – May 2024

Term 2 has seen a definite change in Melbourne weather, but the beaming smiles brought back from the Northern Territory and regional Victoria warm your heart.  It’s so great to see the students again, and they are looking forward to getting back into school, and Footy!

Sally Gorton from Firbank took PJ and Sherry home at the end of Term 1. They met up with Kylie from the Indigenous Youth Mobility Project, who provide accommodation and mentoring in Darwin. And everyone loves a little Cyril action!

Partner Schools

Nickeisha’s sister Kayla was in Melbourne in late April and enjoyed a school tour of Kingswood College. She loved the Indigenous mural, with her kangaroo featured (her totem).

Work Experience

The question “What do you do?” is often asked by family members, and students alike.  Explaining what you do can be a bit confusing, or someone might ‘switch off’ when we think what we’re talking about is awesome!

One of the best ways to find out is through work experience; it’s such a valuable opportunity for students to learn about the world of work and understand the day-to-day realities of working in a particular job, and find out whether you are suited to that job

Siena College organised a week at the law firm of Minter Ellison for Lulu and Alison. They enjoyed a week of activities such as practicing moots, visiting the Melbourne County Court and Supreme court, CV writing and learning about mediation.

Thanks must go to Daniel and Ellie, and the entire team at Minter Ellison, for making this such a great learning experience!

There are more exciting work experience opportunities throughout Term 2 for MITS alumni and we look forward to bringing these stories to you in the next newsletter.

LifeSkills

Time management, resilience, critical thinking, communication, and financial literacy are just some of the skills that MITS senior students develop to guarantee success beyond school.  It also important to develop other skills that accompany and compliment their academic journey.

Each Thursday afternoon St Kevin’s Year 12 MITS boarders plan healthy meals, purchase ingredients, and hone their culinary skills at Waterford campus.  The fellas have created so many mouthwatering meals which they’ve shared with fellow boarders.

Courage

Part of Sam Warrior’s role as Torch Bearer for Parade College is to support the College’s path towards cultural safety and Reconciliation. He recently spoke at the Parade College assembly where he joined with the FIRE carrier students (Friends Igniting Reconciliation through Education).

The FIRE Carrier Project is a joint initiative of the Aboriginal Catholic Ministry Victoria, Opening the Doors Foundation and Catholic Education Sandhurst. It seeks to keep the Reconciliation flame alight in schools, educating the wider community about Reconciliation.

Sam and the FIRE students important role is to advise on RAP actions around the school for the Parade College RISE (Respect Inclusion Safety & Equity) program.

Senior Students showing the way

Awards for Year 9 students for excellent transition attendance (above 90%) into Year 9 in Term 1 were given to Jamelia, Jacquisha, Des, Angel, Hoanna and Lilly. Congratulations on setting such a fine example!

Leadership in action! The Year 7’s proudly showing Sam Warrior their MITS classroom awards.
