Institutions that use several scholarship application methods

Please note: several universities require that some of their scholarships are applied for through VTAC, and that other scholarships are applied for through the institution. These universities are: 

  • Charles Sturt University
  • Deakin University
  • Monash University
  • RMIT University
  • Victoria University

How to complete the VTAC scholarships application

1. Create an account with VTAC

Before you can apply for scholarships, you must create an account with VTAC. See how to create an account here.

2. Log in to your account

To access the scholarship application, you must log in to your account using your VTAC ID and PIN.

3. Open the scholarships application

Select 'Scholarship application' in your VTAC user account. All applications through VTAC are submitted online.

4. Enter your personal details

Your account details will be populated to your scholarship application from your VTAC account.

You will be asked questions about your educational studies and personal background, including:

  • the highest level of education you have undertaken
  • whether you are the first in your immediate family to attend university
  • whether you have Australian Indigenous status
  • whether you will or had to relocate to attend tertiary study
  • whether you plan to reside on-campus
  • whether you have ever been in formal out-of-home care

If you answer 'yes' 

If you answer 'yes' to any of these questions you may be required to provide additional information

5. Provide details of your financial circumstances

You will be asked if your financial circumstances, have or will affect your past or future education.

If you answer 'yes' 

If you answer 'yes' you will be asked to provide additional information. This includes:

  • your financial circumstances and Centrelink benefits received
  • the gross annual income of all persons contributing to your support and amount spent on rent or mortgage payments per week if you are not in receipt of Centrelink, and
  • your marital status, household structure and number of children.

If you have a CRN or CAN in your name

Provide your Centrelink Customer Reference Number (CRN) or Customer Access Number (CAN), so that VTAC can obtain your financial details directly from Centrelink. Permissions.

If you do not give VTAC permission to electronically collect information about your Centrelink benefits you must provide a statement of your benefits in hardcopy. Bank statements or screenshots of your Centrelink benefit payments will not constitute proof.

If you don’t have a CRN or CAN in your name

Provide VTAC with a copy of your parent or guardian’s Centrelink Statement of Benefits (no older than three months) and include your name and relationship on the statement.

If you receive a Family Tax Benefit

If your parent or guardian is in receipt of Family Tax Benefit you must supply a copy of your most recent statement to VTAC with your scholarship coversheet attached. The evidence must clearly list all the family members and the annual household income.

If you don't get Centrelink benefits

For scholarship applications, if you are ineligible for Centrelink benefits and are suffering financial disadvantage, for each member of your household who earns over $10,000 per annum, you must provide:

  • an ATO notice of financial assessment for the 2023/2024 financial year, or
  • failing that, 3 consecutive pay slips in Australian dollars no older than 3 months or, 
  •  a statutory declaration detailing the reason for the lack of these documents and stating the person's taxable income.

6. Provide details of your personal history and experiences

You will be asked if:

  • you or have you been active in community service
  • you have leadership experience or skills
  • you wish to apply for scholarships for students from the Gippsland region
  • your education been disadvantaged by difficult circumstances
  • you have a medical condition or disability which impacts your ability to study
  • you have (or have you been) a refugee or asylum seeker

If you answer 'yes' 

If you answer 'yes' to any of these questions you may be required to provide additional information. This might include a written statement from you and a statement of support from a 'responsible person'. 

7. Written statement addressing the benefit of a scholarship

All applicants will be asked to write a response to the question: 'How will your scholarship benefit your 2024 studies?'

8. Indicate your course application intentions

You will be asked if you have submitted, or are planning to submit, a course application through VTAC.

If you answer 'yes', your scholarship application will be forwarded to any of the listed institutions that are included in your course preference list.

If you are not planning to submit a course application, you will be asked:

  • if you are currently enrolled or deferred at any institution
  • if you are planning to apply directly to an institution (and not through VTAC)
  • if you are planning to apply through the Universities Admission Centre (UAC) in NSW

In order to match course details with your scholarship application:

  • if you are currently enrolled or deferred, you will be asked for your student number
  • if you are planning to apply through UAC, you will be asked for your UAC number

9. Review and submit your scholarship application

You will be asked to review the information you have provided on your scholarship application. You may then submit your application. A record of your scholarship application will be available to view in the 'Scholarship application' section of your VTAC account and also sent to your email address.

10. Supply supporting documents by the closing date

If you need to supply a statement of support or financial evidence this will be indicated as you complete the scholarships application. You will also receive an email listing what you need to provide.

For the statement of support, you can either download a PDF form or generate account logins so that your 'responsible person' can  submit a statement of support online.
