NAIDOC Week
NAIDOC (National Aboriginal and Islanders Day Observance Committee) week occurs annually in July; however, Merbein P10 College chose to recognise it during week 6.
NAIODC week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians all over the country.
Monday May 20, we conducted an Opening Ceremony which included an Acknowledgement of Country from year 10 student, Shauna Lawson and grade 6 Ruby Tatchell, supporting with AUSLAN. Following this our flags were presented and local Elder Uncle Willy Hannah performed a Smoking Ceremony. We concluded the opening ceremony by moving to the gym for an electrifying performance by Mitch Tambo one of Australia's most unique and dynamic First Nations entertainer. Mitch's powerful renditions of iconic songs, like 'You’re the Voice' at the historic Fire Fight Concert in 2020, showcased his commitment to preserving Gamilaraay language and culture, and he did not disappoint once again during his performances at Merbein P10. The students and staff were on their feet enjoying his engaging show.
Monday’s activities continued with the Primary school running their annual NAIDOC rotations. The activities included art and design, indigenous games, yarning circles and cultural talks and further performances from The Voice of Lele and Mitch Tambo. We would like to extend our thanks to the Elders, KESO staff, family and staff who supported to create such a fabulous day for our Primary students. For the remainder of the week the Secondary students were provided with opportunities to take part in similar activities throughout their lunch breaks.
Friday May 24, marked the end of our week-long celebrations. The SRC cooked a sausage sizzle and Johnny cakes at lunch break, while the students from the Koorie Student Action Team and the SRC provided temporary tattoo and facepainting for those who wanted to take part in the festivities. Further photographs and videos can be viewed on our socials pages. Thank you to the families and staff who supported to make this a spectacular week for our entire student body.
Attached are some thoughts and photographs from out students regarding their time celebrating NAIDOC week.

Please book appointments through the school office.
Free flu vaccinations are available for eligible priority groups.
These priority groups include:
- children aged 6 months to 5 years

- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 6 months and over
- pregnant women – at any stage of pregnancy
- people aged 6 months and older with medical conditions putting them at increased risk of severe flu and its complications.
