Maths Challenge Day - Thursday 20 Nov
Get ready for a fun and exciting Maths Challenge Day! On Thursday 20 November, students will take part in a range of activities focused on this term’s theme: Multiplication and Division.
Students will explore engaging tasks that build essential skills in grouping, sharing, and problem-solving. These activities are designed to deepen their understanding of number relationships and boost their confidence in numeracy.
It’s a fantastic opportunity to celebrate mathematical thinking in a hands-on, memorable way.
What Students Are Learning?
Kindergarten to Year 2:
- Early Concepts: Students begin by exploring equal groups, skip counting, and sharing objects fairly.
- Hands-On Learning: Using counters, arrays, and number lines to build foundational understanding.
Years 3 to 6:
- Fluency with Facts: Developing quick recall of multiplication tables and related division facts.
- Flexible Strategies: Applying mental strategies, written methods, and technology to solve problems.
Real-World Applications: Solving word problems involving grouping, sharing, and scaling.
(Did you know?)
- Understanding multiplication and division is more than memorizing times tables, it’s about recognizing patterns, making connections, and thinking flexibly.
- The NSW syllabus encourages students to move from concrete materials to abstract thinking, helping them become confident problem-solvers.
How you can help at home?
- Practice skip counting during everyday activities (e.g., counting steps or snacks).
- Play games involving dice, cards, or online apps to reinforce number facts.
- Encourage your child to explain their thinking when solving problems—it builds deeper understanding!
