Sandhurst Division Cross Country

Congratulations to all 71 of our students who represented the school at the Sandhurst Division Cross Country Championships on Friday, May 22. More than 3,500 students from 65 schools across the region converged on the Bendigo Racecourse for this annual event.

With perfect weather conditions for running, it was fantastic to see our boys and girls pushing themselves to their limits throughout the day. Every student should be incredibly proud of their efforts and achievements.

We had a number of outstanding individual performances, highlighted by Dusty M, who won the 9 Years Girls Elite BLUE Group race. Elliot B also claimed 1st place in the 9 Years RED Group race. Outstanding efforts from both students!

Further excellent results came from Elke W, who finished 3rd in the 10 Years Girls BLUE race, Hudson C, who placed 6th in the 11 Years Boys BLUE race, and Max H, who also finished 6th in the 12 Years Boys BLUE event. By finishing in the top six of their respective age groups, these students have qualified to represent the school at the Regional Cross Country Championships in St Arnaud on Tuesday, June 2. (Please note: only runners from the 10–12 Years BLUE categories progress to the Regional Championships.) We wish them all the very best.

Another highlight of the day came in the team events, where our 9 Years Boys and 9 Years Girls teams both won the Highest Ranked Team awards in the RED category. These students are pictured below.

Special mention to the following students:

Sonny R – 8th in the 11 Years Boys BLUE event.

Elyse H – 9th in the 9 Years Girls BLUE event.

Sammy G - 11th in the 9 Years Boys BLUE event.

Thomas A – 14th in the 11 Years Boys BLUE event.

Lenny M – 14th in the 12 Years Boys BLUE event.

Dash L – 3rd in the 9 Years Boys RED event.

Savannah R-T – 4th in the 9 Years Girls RED event.

Lottie K – 5th in the 9 Years Girls RED event.

Andie J – 7th in the 9 Years Girls RED event.

Jack C – 8th in the 9 Years Boys RED event.

I would like to thanks the staff and parents who accompanied our students on the day. I would particularly like to thank our SEDA students Liam and Holly who worked on the finish line and were great support to our students as they crossed the line.

Auslan News

Grade Preps have completed their Old MacDonald Had a Farm mini-books and will bring these home next week to sign along with you! Preps are now learning how to describe farm animals, using signs for: furry/fluffy, woolly, smelly, jumpy, poisonous, big, small, fast, slow, rough, smooth, tall and short. Prep students will be starting a learning task this week, which will include drawing and signing an animal, its colour and a body description in Auslan.

Grade 1-2s are continuing with their Animal topic this week also, revising Sea, Farm and Zoo animals, and now learning to describe and compare animals using signs including: describing, furry/fluffy, woolly, smelly, jumpy, poisonous, and feathered, big & small, fast & slow, rough & smooth, tall & short, bigger/smaller than, faster/slower than, rougher/smoother than, and taller/shorter than.

Grade 3-4s are now learning new signs in the topic of Transport: transport, travel, car, drive, boat, train, helicopter, plane, van, caravan, truck, scooter, bike, motorbike, bus, caravan, and hot-air balloon.

Grade 5-6s have been revising Number signs to 1000 and beyond. Some basic rules to remember, include:

  • Numbers 0-9 stay still.
  • 10 is a flick of the hand!
  • 11 & 12 are a pinch.
  • The teens we shake!
  • The tens we swipe.
  • Hundreds turn and touch your chin.
  • Thousands – the number first stays still and then the hand drops down with a point handshape for ‘thousand.’

If students are feeling confused by any of these little rules, please encourage them to come and check in with me for some more help.

Grade 5-6s have been applying these rules to Number topics, including signing: Ages from 1month old to 100+years old, Percentages, Fractions and Decimals, as well as Times for o’clock/half past/and all times in between. There is no sign for a.m. or p.m., but we use signs for morning, afternoon and night to differentiate times of day within the sentence we are signing.

Grade 5-6s are creating PowerPoints on a chosen Number topic to present to a small group to practise applying the rules and signs we are learning.
