Principal's Ponderings

From our Principal - Mr Chad Smit

Wholehearted Education - What Truly Matters

There is a quiet but powerful tension in education today. We measure, we track, we analyse. We look at growth, outcomes, data, and performance. These things matter, and they help us steward learning well. But every now and then, we are reminded of something deeper, something far more lasting. As Hedley Beare and Richard Slaughter wisely reflected, not everything that matters in education can be measured. How do you quantify a child’s growing confidence? How do you assign a number to kindness, to courage, to faith, or to a love of learning?

Scripture gently anchors us here. In 1 Samuel 16:7 we are reminded, “The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

What if the truest work of our school is heart work? Not just what students know, but who they are becoming. Not just what they achieve, but how they love, serve, and live. This is the call of wholehearted education, the education we strive to teach at DCS.

In Colossians 3:23 we are encouraged, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.” This is not a call to perfection, but to purpose. A reminder that our daily interactions, quiet encouragements, patient explanations, and faithful presence are all part of something sacred.

Every time a student feels seen, valued, and known, something eternal is taking place. Every time a child begins to believe, “I can do this,” or “I am loved,” we are witnessing transformation that no spreadsheet could ever capture.

Dallas Willard once said, “The most important thing in your life is not what you do, it’s who you become.” And the same is true for our students. Yes, we pursue excellence. Yes, we steward learning with diligence and clarity. But we do so as a community that knows the greatest outcomes are often invisible at first.

A growing love of reading.

A heart softening toward others.

A student choosing integrity when no one is watching.

A quiet moment of prayer, trust, or surrender.

These are the markers of a life being shaped for God’s purposes.

As we continue this year under the theme of ‘Wholehearted’, may we lift our eyes beyond what can be measured and celebrate what truly matters. May we teach, lead, and serve with full hearts, knowing that God is at work in ways far beyond what we can see. And may we be encouraged, that the seeds we are planting today, in faith, in love, in truth, will bear fruit in the lives of our students for years to come.

Our Prayer

Lord, help us to see what You see.

Give us eyes for the heart, not just the outcome.

Strengthen us to serve wholeheartedly, with love, patience, and faith.

And remind us daily that the work we do matters deeply in Your Kingdom.

Amen.

Shalom,

Chad
