Managing Screen Time

Many families continue to struggle to establish healthy boundaries and routines around screen use, with some experiencing ongoing digital conflict at home.

Recent research found that 77% of teenagers spend more than five hours on screens each day, although it is important to recognise that not all screen time is equal.

Parents play a crucial role in modelling a positive and healthy approach to screen use and helping children navigate the content they watch. Encourage open conversations about the challenges of managing screen time.

Parents also need to remain firm and consistent in their approach to managing screen time. Excessive screen use can negatively affect a child’s overall wellbeing. Ensuring appropriate privacy settings are in place is essential to reduce the risk of children being exposed to inappropriate content or unsafe online interactions.

Parents should also be mindful of the potential impact screen time can have on a child’s social, emotional, educational, behavioural, and physical development.

In this edition of SchoolTV, care-givers will be provided with a range of guidelines and strategies to help manage screen time at home.

REMINDER

National Walk Safely to School Day –

Friday 22 May

On Friday 22 May, we will be supporting National Walk Safely to School Day, an important initiative that promotes safe road‑use behaviours and healthy, active travel for our students.

Walking to school provides valuable opportunities for children to learn and practise essential road‑safety skills. When walking with an adult, students can build confidence in:

  • Crossing roads safely at designated crossings
  • Walking with an adult and holding hands where appropriate
  • Stopping, looking left and right, listening, and thinking before crossing

To support families, our school walking map highlights nearby locations where families can safely park and walk part of the journey to school. Even short walks help reduce traffic congestion around the school and encourage physical activity as part of daily routines.

Fewer cars at the school gate creates a calmer and safer environment for everyone. It also helps ensure that those who do need to drive can do so safely during pick‑up and drop‑off times, benefiting all members of our community.
