📖 Literacy
Over the past fortnight, students have continued to enjoy reading Off We Go Around Australia. They followed the family’s journey around Australia and concluded the story with the family sharing a campfire and telling fun stories about their trip.
In sentence-level writing, students used their knowledge from the text to create sentences using conjunctions such as because, but and so. They also practised creating compound and complex sentences using a variety of sentence starters.
In text-level writing, students completed their explanation pieces on waterfalls. They planned and wrote concluding paragraphs using the TSG structure (thesis statement, specific statement, general statement) to finish their pieces and thoroughly enjoyed using the Chromebooks to publish their final work.

Students will begin their new unit by reading the picture story book Finding Our Heart by Thomas Mayor. This engaging text explains the Uluru Statement from the Heart in a way that is accessible to children. Students will explore Australia’s Indigenous history, the impacts of colonisation, and the importance of listening to First Nations voices to promote unity, understanding and reconciliation.
➗ Maths
Over the past fortnight, students concluded their unit on measurement. They applied their learning to a rich task where they helped build ‘Bob’s Backyard’. Using the given measurements of different fruits and vegetables, students calculated how many plants could fit into Bob’s backyard, demonstrating their problem-solving and measurement skills.
Students have also enjoyed beginning their new unit on patterns. They have explored different strategies to identify doubling patterns and used calculators to check whether numbers could be divided by 2 to determine if they belonged to the pattern. In addition to this, students have been learning to identify multiples of 2, 5 and 10 using a range of number strategies.

In the next unit, students will be exploring data representation. They will learn the difference between categorical and numerical data and develop an understanding of how to create appropriate survey questions to suit the purpose of an investigation. For example, students may investigate topics such as “Grade 3 students’ favourite sport” using questions such as “What is your favourite sport to play at school?”
Students will also learn how to collect, organise and interpret data, before constructing graphs to represent their findings clearly and accurately.
Knowledge Rich
Students have continued to enjoy learning about First Nations Peoples. Working collaboratively in groups, students have explored a range of cultural practices, including dance, song, storytelling, ceremonies, and the important role of Elders in passing on knowledge to future generations. They have also investigated how First Nations groups are connected across Australia, developing an understanding of shared histories, cultures and relationships to Country.
Students have further explored how colonisation impacted the lives of First Nations Peoples and reflected on the lasting changes it brought to communities. In addition, they have begun to consider the ways First Nations Peoples have shaped and continue to influence our local area, deepening their appreciation of culture, resilience and contribution.
Wellbeing
Students enjoyed their first Circles session back for Term 2. The focus of the session was respect, with students discussing and recording the many ways they can demonstrate respect at school.
It was wonderful to see students actively participating and engaging in a game of “Respect Rock, Paper, Scissors”, where they practised respectful interactions by high-fiving or shaking hands and saying “good game” to their partner before moving on to play with someone new.

Going forward, students will explore how they can recognise and use their personal and cultural strengths in a range of different situations. They will develop an understanding of what strengths are and how these can help them in their learning, friendships and everyday experiences at school.
Students will also identify and reflect on their own strengths by exploring well-known characters. For example, they may consider Moana, whose character strengths include being brave, determined and positive, and discuss how these traits help her overcome challenges.
