Learning Reflection

Literature
Over the past fortnight in Literacy, the Grade 2 students completed their study of The City of Lights, where they practised recalling key information, discussing authorâs purpose, building vocabulary knowledge, and writing compound sentences using conjunctions.Â
Â
Students have now begun exploring Curiosity: The Story of a Mars Rover, which tells the true story of a rover sent from Earth to explore the planet Mars. The book follows Curiosityâs journey from being carefully designed and built by scientists, to its launch into space, and finally its landing on the rocky surface of Mars. When reading this informative text, the students have been developing their comprehension skills by identifying key ideas and details, discussing informative text features, and exploring how diagrams and images help readers understand information. Students have also been learning about factual recounts and newspaper articles by planning and publishing their own writing using the Single Paragraph Outline (SPO) structure. They have focused on writing in clear, informative language and using time connectives to sequence events logically.Â

Â
Preview - Over the next few weeks, the Grade 2 students will begin exploring our new Literature text, The Lorax, alongside our new Knowledge Rich unit on Ancient Greece. Students will also complete a range of literacy assessments to showcase the skills and knowledge they have developed throughout the semester.Â

Word Work
Â
â MathsÂ
Over the past two weeks in Numeracy, our Grade 2 students have been building their confidence and fluency with addition and subtraction strategies. Students explored doubles and near doubles facts, fact families, and a range of mental maths strategies to support efficient and flexible thinking when solving problems quickly and accurately.
Â
To deepen their understanding, students used concrete materials such as MAB blocks to model numbers and support their learning. They practised adding and subtracting one- and two-digit numbers, including using regrouping strategies to solve more complex problems. It has been wonderful to see students developing confidence in explaining their thinking and choosing strategies that work best for them.
Â
Preview -Â Over the next fortnight, students will use blank number lines to solve two-digit addition and subtraction problems, with and without regrouping, while building efficient mental strategies.
đ Wellbeing
Last week our students loved participating in the first Circles session for the term, focusing on our school value of Respect, knowing that it means we are considerate of ourselves, others, and the environment.
Â
This week in Wellbeing, the Grade 2 students explored different ways to manage stress and relax their bodies and minds, especially at bedtime. Through the story of âWibbly,â students brainstormed calming strategies and practised two guided relaxation exercises: a âMelting Momentsâ body relaxation and a peaceful âFloating Cloudâ visualisation. Students reflected on how these activities made them feel and discussed when they could use these strategies at home or school. It was wonderful to see students thoughtfully sharing ideas and recognising the importance of looking after their wellbeing and getting a good nightâs sleep.Â
Students have also loved using their imagination in the Curious Corner, practising their communication skills at the same time!
Â
Preview - Â Â Continuing our topic of stress management, we will be focusing on what we can do during specific stressful situations, for instance, making new friends.
