National Careers Week Report

During May, we celebrated National Careers Week with our own Careers Week Program. Each year level participated in a full-day of events that provided unique opportunities for students to further explore careers and to help with making informed decisions about potential future pathways.

Highlights throughout the week included:

Career Journey Presentations; Deadly Careers & Deadly Aspirations Quick Chats; Morrisby Career Profiling; Job Jump with Melbourne Uni & The Smith Family; VR Industry Experiences; Interview/Job Preparation presentation; Apprenticeships & Traineeships presentation; Federation University trip.

The Career Journey talks allowed students to hear about the various career experiences and pathways of many of our staff as well as other speakers from various industries.

Some of the key messages (quotes) from our speakers were:

  • Be resilient, never give up and persevere

  • Have a positive growth-mindset and look at the positives

  • Have a willingness to learn, persevere, seek and embrace opportunities, undertake Work Experience

  • Step out of your comfort zone

  • Look for how to improve yourself or operations/systems

  • Have goals to work towards, chase your dreams

  • Nothing is concrete, there are always other avenues you can follow

  • Don’t be scared to start at the bottom, don’t be afraid to have a go

  • Ask questions, stay curious- if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.

We would like to thank and acknowledge the following organisations for their support and participation in the program: Apprenticeships & Traineeships Australia, Assuria, Ballarat City Council, Highlands LLEN, The Smith Family, Federation University, Melbourne University Medical School, The Y Ballarat, Ballarat Wildlife Park, Aboriginal Education Centre.

ACU Excursion – Year 9 Careers

Next week, all Year 9 students will be heading to the Australian Catholic University (ACU), located locally in Mair Street, Lake Wendouree.

Classes will be going on the following dates:

  • 9A and 9B Tuesday 23 June

  • 9C and 9E Wednesday 24 June

  • 9D Thursday 25 June

This excursion is a great chance for students to learn about work, University, and other further education and career pathways options. It is also useful travel training, as students and staff catch public transport to and from the campus. Students with phones are encouraged to download the Public Transport Victoria app as we will be using this to plan our journey.

Students also need to organise a Youth Myki card which costs $5 (via the Service Victoria app and/or staffed train stations) and travel is free (for under 18 years).

Parents/carers are reminded to please provide consent for this excursion on Compass or signing and returning the permission form.

Year 10 Work Experience

This week, a large number of our Year 10 students have  been out in the workforce, experiencing what a working-week is like, observing others in the workplace, using and developing work-related skills, and importantly, gaining an experience that will help students with making further decisions about their future pathways. It is always wonderful to visit students during Work Experience and see them displaying attributes like confidence, maturity, and positive work ethic. Students are required to complete a variety of tasks in their Work Experience Booklet during their placement and return this to school immediately after Work Experience. Congratulations and well done to students who have already completed Work Experience earlier this term and to the many students who have placements organized for next term. It is wonderful to see students taking advantage of this opportunity and demonstrating responsibility and a growth mindset.
