Celebrating Refugee Week

This week, our Year 4 students participated in activities to celebrate Refugee Week and deepen their understanding of what it means to be a refugee or asylum seeker. Students explored why people are forced to leave their homes and the challenges many families face when seeking safety and a new beginning.
As part of their learning, our Year 4 students partnered with Year 1 students to share their knowledge and explain what they had learned about refugees and asylum seekers. It was wonderful to see our older students confidently teaching and supporting their younger peers.
Together, students watched the video "No Matter Where You Come From… Footy is for Everyone", which celebrates diversity and inclusion in Australia. The video highlighted the message that our differences make us stronger, with one player sharing, "The Socceroos aren't just a team. We are a reflection of modern Australia. Our diversity is our strength."
Students discussed how these messages connect to our EVPS community, where everyone is welcomed, valued and encouraged to belong. They also reflected on what it means to wear our school uniform with pride and represent our school community through kindness, respect and inclusion.
To conclude the session, Year 1 and Year 4 students worked collaboratively on a large colouring poster featuring people from diverse backgrounds around the world. Each group coloured a different section before piecing the artwork back together, creating a powerful visual reminder that although we are all unique, we belong together as one community.
Refugee Week provided a valuable opportunity for students to develop empathy, celebrate diversity and strengthen their understanding that everyone deserves to feel safe, respected and included.
Kind regards,
