English Faculty

Dear parents and caregivers,

What a busy term it has been! As we wrap up these final few days, the English faculty at MAHS wanted to take this opportunity to shine a spotlight on some of the wonderful achievements of our students.

Debating

On the debating front, our Year 7 debaters made it through to the regional knockout finals after successfully winning all 3 of their zone championship debates against local high schools. This debate was a challenging one and required our students to think on their feet. Unfortunately our students were not successful with progressing through to the next round, however, we wanted to take this opportunity to recognise their accomplishments. Our debaters exemplified our school values of cooperate, respect and strive, and we could not be prouder of their achievements! Preparations are already underway to make a stronger comeback next year!

Book Week

For Book Week, students had the opportunity to participate in a multitude of competitions and showcase their artistic skills! For our writers, there was a writing competition where students were required to craft and submit a 500 word short story based on the theme ‘Symphony of Stories’. For our illustrators, students had the opportunity to design a bookcover based on the same theme, or enter into a poster competition that highlighted the connection between music and stories by designing a playlist to accompany their poster about a book that they love. There were some fantastic submissions and we are so incredibly thrilled with the talent and creativity of our students!

Within our classrooms, students have deepened their understanding of engaging narratives through their novel studies. This term, students have read and dissected novels from a range of genres, evaluating them for effective characters, plot, setting, and exploration of themes and concepts. Our Year 10s on the other hand have been busy evaluating the modernised film 10 Things I Hate About You against Shakespeare’s original play Taming of the Shrew, paying particular attention to how societal changes can influence the way in which texts are appropriated for modern audiences.

Finally, as we wrap up these final few days of Term 3, we wanted to take a moment to wish the current Year 12 cohort luck on their upcoming HSC exams. It’s been a busy term for students as they completed their Trial HSC exams and wrapped up their final few lessons. Students are currently in the midst of undertaking final further preparations before their exams commence on October 13th 2026.

It has been a mammoth term and we wish all students a safe and restful break. We look forward to seeing everyone at the beginning of Term 4!
