News from the Chicken Coop

Thank you

Thanks to the Coates and Bower families for looking after our gorgeous feathered friends over the  last couple of weekends. We heard you found lots of eggs, yum!

Chicken Duty Roster

Thank you to all the wonderful families who have volunteered to do weekend chicken duty throughout term 1. If anyone has missed out this term don’t worry! School holidays are just around the corner! Start thinking about what dates you would like to put your name down for and get in quick as holiday chicken duties are very popular!

Please email Mel at mkerwin@sjmitcham.catholic.edu.au with your preferred dates (3-4 days if possible) if you are interested in being added to the roster. Remember, first in, first choice of dates!

Chicken Coop Maintenance-We Need Your Help!

Urgent maintenance work is needed to be done on the chicken coop to keep the nasty fox away from our chickens. We are looking for anyone with building or handyperson skills to help out. The wire on the enclosure is beginning to rust so it needs replacing/repairing. We will pay for all materials and labour required.  Please email Mel at mkerwin@sjmitcham.catholic.edu.au or see Verona at the office for more information.

RAFFLE - First Prize is Our Chickens Eggs - Egg Lotto

Tickets are available to buy at any time, just bring your money into school and the Environment Leaders will help you out. We usually sell tickets in front of the school on Wednesday afternoon from 3:10-3:20pm, selling tickets to students, parents, grandparents and carers.

All the money we make is put back into buying food and other necessities for our chickens. The next Egg Lotto draw will be Monday 26 February. There will be a few dozen eggs available to win so get your winning $1 raffle ticket soon!

News from the Garden

Last week we began selling some lovely brown onions fresh from the garden that we have been growing in our wicking beds at school. We also had home grown red and green chillies for sale that were very popular!

New Vegetables are growing all of the time. Please come and visit our little stall on Wednesday, you never know what we might have to sell along with the egg lotto tickets!

Clean Up Australia Day for Schools

This year Clean Up Australia Day for schools is on Friday, 1 March.

We will all be participating and helping our school to stay clean. Each class will be given a bucket and gloves for students and teachers to use to clean up any rubbish they find in their designated area around the school. This will be done at 2:20pm

straight after recess on Friday. We will be doing a waste audit of the rubbish found in the playground as well as an audit of our classroom bins to raise awareness of the amount of landfill one small school produces on a daily basis. Can we reduce this amount and do our part in helping the environment?

We hope everyone can be a part of this great initiative to reduce our waste and to help keep our school clean! https://www.cleanup.org.au/about-us
