Founders Day Mass
Yesterday our St. John's Founders Day Mass was a great success. We give thanks to all the school families and staff who attended, as we acknowledged founding members of our Parish in Mitcham. Two of our school captains Lachlan Hansen and Kirralee Coates presented their speeches about Gladys McLachlan after interviewing her with several questions about her fondest memories and contributions to our Parish. Gladys was so humble and gracious being interviewed, sharing that one of the main reasons she moved with her family to Mitcham was because of the strong Parish and School, where she could remain connected to her faith. The Parish community was and still is imporatnt to Gladys because of the friendships that she has made. Coaching school netball teams, cooking for the fete and having her children complete their sacraments, were all part of her memories.
Glady’s message for the children of St John’s Parish is to really apply yourself to your studies and to make the most of every opportunity. She reminded us not putting off till tomorrow what you can do today. Gladys asks that all the parents give lots of encouragement to their children, to help them find something they enjoy and which will support them in a successful career for the future.
We are very proud of all that Gladys has contributed to our School and Parish community over the past 67 years and recognise her as an outstanding Founding member of our St John’s parish community.
Our School Choir
Congratulations to our school choir who helped sing so beautifully at our Founders Day Mass on Sunday, 18 February. We appreciate all of our students who gave some of their time to help make our mass a joyful and special experience. Amanda Hill our Performing Arts and Music teacher has commenced weekly Choir practice every Friday afternoon. Our students are learning their favourite songs and some Hymns as well. You may have noticed that our students are singing a lot more during Mass as they are all becoming more familiar with the words to hymns including "With Faith and Love". Several years ago Andrew Chinn ( Musician) wrote this song with our students and had it recorded.
If your child is interested in joining our school choir and willing to practise each Friday at 2:30pm with Mrs Amanda Hill, please email Amanda on ahill@sjmitcham.catholic.edu.au
LENT
Last Sunday's Gospel, shared the story about Jesus' 40 days in the desert where he was tempted to sway his from his beliefs and God's plan. Jesus had just been baptised in the River Jordan and had so much courage and spiritual nourishment to keep to God's plan. We pray for all our families and friends in our community, that they may also have the courage to conquer any challenges with the support of their families, friends and faith.
