FOUNDATION
This semester, we’ve had fun getting to know the Prep students and exploring storytelling through fairy tales. We looked at “good” and “bad” characters, changed story outcomes, and identified key events in stories — building a foundation for scriptwriting in later years. Students also learned how to present in front of the camera and enjoyed the chance to speak to an audience.
YEAR ONE
This semester, students explored photography, with a focus on composition and lighting. They captured some incredible images, learning how to adjust camera settings to suit different subjects. Students also learned about teamwork by exploring the roles within a film crew. To prepare for their Term 3 film project for Springfest, they began planning and creating props and costumes. We can’t wait to see what they come up with!
YEAR TWO
This semester, Year Two students explored the art of recording sound through Foley art. They used everyday objects to mimic sounds from their environment, creating sound effects and soundscapes to bring stories and images to life. Students learned just how important sound is in film, as well as the protocols for working in a recording studio. We then dived into creating a music video clip using a new song from one of Media Arts’ favourite bands — A Good Good Day at Last by OKGO. We hope everyone enjoys watching it at Springfest!
YEAR THREE
This year began with an exploration of shot types through the medium of comic books, using camera angles and positioning to visually tell a story. In Term 2, students shifted their focus to publishing, working collaboratively to create children's picture books based on class-written narratives. They edited, planned, and illustrated each story with creativity and teamwork, aiming to have a professionally printed book ready to share at Springfest.
YEAR FOUR
Year Four students explored forced perspective photography, applying their knowledge of composition and framing. They used techniques such as the rule of thirds, symmetry, angles, proportion, rotation, and positioning to creatively manipulate the viewer’s point of view. Students were encouraged to take their time when planning, setting up shots, and reviewing which photos to keep or delete. In Term 2, we studied Monroe’s Five Steps of Persuasion and created individual infomercials in preparation for a class project coming up in Term 3.
YEAR FIVE
This semester, Year Five students explored how different shot types are used in film to visually communicate with an audience. They investigated the conventions of genre filmmaking and are now preparing to film short genre scenes in Term 3, inspired by the Wonder precepts they studied in class earlier this year. These films will be showcased at Springfest.
YEAR SIX
Year Six students have been preparing for their Springfest projects, using an aspect of Media Arts to create a piece of work of their choice. They have selected from a range of media, including filmmaking, animation, photography, sound design, and print media, and will continue planning and creating their projects throughout Term 3. We’re looking forward to seeing the amazing results!
We are very excited to be working towards celebrating Springfest this year and look forward to sharing all the wonderful things happening in the specialist areas at Pakenham Springs.
