Assistant Principal Reports

 Deanne Scott/Joshua Fielding

Dear Parents and Carers,

At Deer Park West Primary School we value the diversity of culture, ethnicity, and faith of all our students. We are proud of our diversity, and everyone is welcome at our school.

Deer Park West Primary School has recently been told about some racist incidents that have not supported these values. This has included students engaging in online chats from home, using racist language and slurs and photographs. This behaviour is unacceptable and will not be tolerated at our school. We are taking immediate action as part of our commitment to make our school a safe and inclusive place for everyone.

Celebrating the diversity of our community makes us stronger, kinder and innovative. We are committed to ensuring that students from all backgrounds feel accepted, supported and are empowered to learn.

Deer Park West Primary School has taken steps to ensure the school is a place free of racism and where everyone feels welcome, respected and supported.

To achieve our values and aims, everyone at Deer Park West Primary School plays an important role, and we are writing to ask for your support.

We ask that you support your child/ren to:

  • understand that we celebrate diversity and multicultural inclusion
  • understand the importance of everyone at school being treated with respect
  • understand that Deer Park West Primary School takes racism very seriously
  • understand that the school will support students if they experience or see their classmates experience this racism
  • understand the impact of using racist slurs and the harm it may cause other students, and the importance of using respectful language at school and in the broader community.

Your partnership in reinforcing these values at home will significantly help create a more respectful and inclusive environment at school.

For more information, please see Racism: talking with children and teens, Raising Children Network.

If you or your child/ren have experienced racism or other unfair treatment, Deer Park West Primary School is here to help. Talk to Ms Miller, our school Social Worker. She can help you understand the school policies, access support and make a complaint.

If you don’t feel comfortable reporting the incident to school, you can call or email the Report Racism hotline. The Department of Education runs the Report Racism hotline. It is available 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays) on 1800 722 476 or via email at report.racism@education.vic.gov.au.

If you need an interpreter to call the school, please use the details available at: Guide for Families: How to use an interpreter to contact your school

Thank you for your help and support.

End of Semester Reports

Student reports will be available to families on Compass from Monday afternoon. A notification will be sent via Compass when reports become available. We encourage all parents and carers to take the time to read through their child’s report and celebrate their achievements and progress this semester. It is also important that families take the time to read through their child’s report prior to attending our Parent Teacher Conferences on Tuesday 1st of July.

If you have any difficulty accessing the report, please contact the school office for support. Please note that the office will not be printing reports for families not accessing Compass.

Mathematics Curriculum 2.0 – Changes to Reporting

The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) has recently released an updated Mathematics curriculum – Mathematics Curriculum 2.0, which all government schools, including ours, are now using from 2025.

Previously, your child’s Mathematics report was broken down into three strands: Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. Under the new curriculum, teachers will report on Mathematics as a single achievement standard, meaning you will now see one overall score for Mathematics.

Please note that for this semester’s report, your child’s result for Mathematics will show achievement only, not progress. From Semester 2 onwards, both achievement and progress will be reported against the new single Mathematics standard.

This is what your child’s report previously looked like reporting against Mathematics Curriculum 1.0

This is what your child’s report will look like this Semester, reporting against the updated Mathematics Curriculum 2.0

If you have any queries regarding this, please speak with your child’s classroom teacher.

Inside the classrooms

As we approach the end of another term, it is a great opportunity to celebrate all of the fantastic learning that has been taking place in our classrooms. Our teachers and students regularly share what our students are learning via Seesaw. Keep an eye out for the latest posts. These posts are a great way to connect with your child/ren about their learning and progress.

Our Foundation students have been learning to describe the duration of activities. They are learning that different activities can take a short, medium or long time.

In Year 4 they have been using their learning about area, perimeter, mulitplication, division, grid references and mapping to design their own zoo maps.

Our Year 2s really enjoyed their excursion to Como House, learning about Family Life in the past and present.

Kind regards,
