Grade 4

Maths:

This week in Mathematics, our Grade 4 students successfully finalised their unit on fractions after three weeks of focused learning. Throughout this unit, the children have explored fractions in depth, beginning with understanding and creating equivalent fractions, before moving on to mixed fractions and improper fractions. They also made strong connections between fractions and decimals, learning how to convert between the two and recognise their place in everyday situations.

Students have engaged in a variety of hands-on activities, problem-solving tasks, and discussions to strengthen their understanding. For example, they used number lines, fraction walls, and visual models to compare and order fractions, and applied their knowledge to real-world contexts such as sharing, measurement, and money.

It has been wonderful to see their confidence grow, particularly in explaining their reasoning and using mathematical language to describe the relationships between fractions and decimals. To finish off the unit, students completed a short assessment task that gave them the opportunity to demonstrate the skills and strategies they have been building.

Literacy:

After finishing Storm Boy last week, we began an exciting new Literacy unit. This week, our focus shifted to foxes as background knowledge for our upcoming class text Fox by Margaret Wild. Students enjoyed reading a range of factual texts about foxes, learning not only interesting information about their appearance, habitats, and behaviours, but also practising key comprehension skills to build meaning and make connections.

Alongside reading, we revisited sentence structure. Students revised how to write clear simple sentences before moving on to creating compound sentences using conjunctions. They also practised turning dot points into full sentences – an important skill for developing more detailed and polished writing.

This combination of reading for knowledge and writing for accuracy has set us up well for the term ahead. Students are already looking forward to diving into Fox next week and exploring its themes together.
