Year 6 News

Reading
This fortnight in Reading, Year 6 students have been exploring the world of poetry. They have been learning how to analyse poems by identifying themes, imagery, and figurative language, and considering how these features shape meaning and mood. Students also compared different poetic styles, from traditional forms to modern free verse, and discussed how poets use structure and rhythm to enhance their ideas. Through reading and thoughtful discussion, they developed a deeper appreciation of how poetry can capture emotions and experiences in powerful and unique ways.

Students then began to look at the basic concepts of algebra and solving equations with unknowns. Students learnt that ‘unknowns’ can be represented by many symbols but are commonly represented by x, y, a, b,and C. Have a look at some of the amazing work the year 6 cohort have been producing.

Inquiry
The Year 6 students have been investigating natural disasters in Australia, focusing on cyclones, floods, and bushfires. They began by researching their chosen disaster, identifying its causes and impacts, and presenting their findings with diagrams and charts of real-life examples.
Students then explored risk management plans to understand how individuals, communities, and governments prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters. This helped them see how strategies such as evacuation routes, early warnings, and community support reduce risks and build resilience.
To support their inquiry, students also practised using safe, reliable online sources. They learned how to refine Google searches and identify trustworthy domains such as .gov.au, .edu, and .org.au. They applied this knowledge to strengthen their own risk management plans, organised around the Prepare – Respond – Recover framework.
Through these lessons, students have developed critical research and digital literacy skills while deepening their understanding of the importance of disaster preparation in Australian communities.

Social and Emotional Learning
Year 6 students have been exploring what it means to show respect in their classroom, school, and community. They discussed respectful behaviours such as listening, sharing, and caring for others, and reflected on why respect is essential for a safe and positive learning environment.
Building on this, students learned skills and strategies for developing respectful relationships. They practised seeking, giving, and denying permission respectfully, and considered how different situations can influence emotional responses.
In their Digital Citizenship focus, students explored the four-step process of being an upstander online. They examined how online bullying can affect others, identified safe strategies to support a friend, and practised responses such as posting a positive comment, saying “this is not OK,” or seeking help from a trusted adult. They also connected this learning back to the key ideas of consent, boundaries, and respect in both online and offline spaces.
Through these lessons, students are building the knowledge and confidence to strengthen respectful relationships and contribute positively to their communities.

Special Event
Fathers Day Stall
To celebrate Father’s Day, Year 6 students had the opportunity to visit the Father’s Day Stall and choose a gift for their dads, grandfathers, uncles and other special people in their lives.
Many Year 6 students also attended the after-school card making session where they were able to create some cards with the help of their teachers. Other students created cards and gifts in class, adding some personal touches to make them just perfect. These thoughtful gifts and handmade cards gave students a meaningful way to show their appreciation for the important father figures in their lives and celebrate the importance they are in all our lives.
