Year 5 News

Gradwear is coming!!
Reading
This fortnight in Reading, Year 5 students have been learning about book recommendations and how they help other people choose books to read. Students have learnt about all of the important information that must be included in a book recommendation, such as, title, author, synopsis, their favourite part, recommendation, rating and the genre. Year 5 students have worked hard to create their own book recommendations for a book of their choice and were excited to share books they love and discover new ones they may want to read.
Students have also had the opportunity to explore the work of Gus Gordon, an Australian author and illustrator. They have been investigating how Gus Gordon uses different fonts and text styles to create mood, reflect characters’ emotions and make his stories unique. Students noticed that bold fonts often show strong feelings, while softer, curly fonts can represent gentleness.

Writing
In Writing, Year 5 students have continued to draft the final parts of their narratives by writing the climax, falling action and resolution of their stories. They have carefully revised and edited their work before choosing how they would like to publish. Students also spent some time reading their narratives to one another and took pride in all of the hard work that they had put in over the past three weeks.

‘I am enjoying writing my own chapter book.’ - Devrim 5D
Maths
Over the past two weeks in Maths, Year 5 students have continued their learning on Angles. They have practised drawing angles, making sure to always start at 0 on the protractor. Students have also looked at unknown angles. They discovered strategies for finding missing angles by applying their knowledge of complementary (angles that add to 90°) and supplementary (angles that add to 180°) rules.
‘I have learnt how to use a protractor to measure angles.’ - Jhavier 5D
Inquiry
In Inquiry, Year 5 students explored the idea of an environmental footprint. They learned that a footprint is a way of measuring how much energy, water, food and transport we use and how many Earths we need to support our lifestyles. Students worked in pairs to create their own environmental footprint calculators, where they compared scores with their classmates and discussed ways that they can reduce their impact.
Students have also learnt about the multiple different biomes around the world, such as, deserts, grasslands, rainforests, looking at climate, plants, human impacts and animals. Year 5 students are beginning to design their own biome projects to show their understanding of how these ecosystems function and why it is important to protect them.
Auslan
This fortnight in Auslan, Year 5 students have been busy learning how to sign things around the house. Students learnt how to sign everyday items such as, house, door, window, couch, fridge, oven, kitchen and so much more. They played a game of Voices Off Pictionary, where one team had to draw the household item while another team guessed the item by signing correctly.
Students have also learnt how to sign different types of Sea Animals. They enjoyed learning how to sign animals like starfish, turtle, dolphin, octopus and shark. Students listened and watched a signed story where they identified animals that they recognised.
Social and Emotional Learning
In SEL, Year 5 students have shared their positive coping profiles with a partner. They retold one of their partners’ strategies to the rest of the class and identified a similar strategy and a different one. This helped students realise that even though we all deal with challenges in different ways, we can still support each other. Students have also reflected on ways they can respond to challenges in a calm manner.
They had the opportunity to display their showcase through a presentation, poster, comic strip or a role play. Take a look at some of their creative work!
Special Event
Father’s Day Stall: In celebration of Father’s Day, students had the opportunity to visit the Father’s Day Stall to purchase a gift for their dads, grandfathers or another special person in their lives. Some students joined in for a special card making session after school, while others worked on their card creations during class time. Year 5 students appreciate all the love, care and support they receive from their father figures and these gifts and cards were a special way to say thank you!
All of 5D want to wish all their Fathers and special people in their life a very Happy Father’s Day for last Sunday! We hope you all had a lovely day!!!!!
