Year 2 News

Reading
The Year 2 cohort has been reading nonfiction texts, exploring various features such as contents pages, subheadings, labels, captions, and fun facts. They have been making inferences based on their reading. Additionally, Year 2 students have been engaging with nonfiction texts on digital platforms, comparing the similarities and differences between these and traditional nonfiction texts.
“In reading we were making inferences. I had fun.” - Mya 2A
“This week we were learning about making inferences. It was different to what we did last week. We read books that are non fiction. Mrs Ozen gave us questions on the TV to answer.” - Zareen 2A
“We have been looking at digital texts and nonfiction texts. We created a venn diagram which is made up of two circles and the mini oval in the middle is what they both have.” - Ivaan 2C
Writing
This wee Year 2 cohort have been diving into the fascinating world of life cycles through their writing. The students have been writing explanation texts to explain the life cycles of a range of animals.
In their writing, students have been learning to describe each stage of a life cycle, from beginning to end, using sequencing words like first, next, then, and finally to guide the reader and include interesting facts about animals and plants. From butterflies to frogs, flowers to kangaroos, the students are becoming experts at explaining the amazing journeys of life.
“The caterpillar stage is when the skin gets too tight for its body and it eats while it is moving.” - Zoe 2A
“A life cycle of a butterfly has four stages. They are eggs, larva, pupa and adult.” - Emily 2C
“We have been learning about explanation texts. There are four stages, the egg, the larva, the pupa and the last stage is the butterfly. We got to edit our work and publish our work too.” - Zareen 2A
“We were writing about the life cycle of a butterfly, frog or kangaroo. I am publishing my butterfly.” - Mya 2A
“We have been writing about the life cycle of a kangaroo. A baby kangaroo has to crawl into its mothers pouch after it has been born. It is the size of a jellybean!” - Ayla 2C
"We were writing about the butterflies. It was fun when we were writing because we were writing how they were growing and changing into the larva, chrysalis and butterfly.” - Eliz 2A
"We've been learning about a kangaroos lifecycle when it’s born it climbs into the mothers pouch using its instinct it drink its mothers milk growing in the pouch. When it gets too big it can hop out.” - Lucas 2A
Maths
This fortnight in Mathematics, Year 2 students focused on completing their work on division in Maths and are now beginning to explore measurement. In measurement, they are learning about length by using informal units such as hand spans and feet to measure different objects around the classroom. This hands-on approach is helping them understand how to compare lengths and develop a practical sense of measurement.
“We were measuring length by using our hands. I measured lots of things. It was very fun. I measured the Steps Board, the door and I also measured my table. It was fun measuring.” - Amy 2A
‘I learnt that we can measure long and tall things’ - Alyssa 2B
‘I enjoyed using my hands to measure and blocks’ - Hunter 2B
‘I know the first number in division is the one you will be splitting into groups. 6 divided by 2 would be 3 as I have to split 6 into 2 equal groups. You can’t split an odd number in half because you will get a decimal. 5 divided by 2 would equal 2.5.’
Inquiry
This fortnight in Year 2, the students have been discovering the amazing journeys of plants and animals through their life cycles. They’ve been learning how living things grow and change, starting from babies or seeds all the way to adults. In class, the children have explored the different stages in life cycles, like eggs hatching into chicks or seeds growing into flowers, they have talked about what living things need to grow healthy and strong and created drawings and explanation writing to show what they’ve learned.
Year 2 have been very curious about animal life cycles, they have asked great scientific questions and shared interesting facts with one another.
In addition, Year 2 students have been scientists in the making! They planted bean seeds and started an exciting experiment to watch how plants grow.
The students learned how to care for their beans by giving them water, sunlight, and a little bit of patience. They made daily observations, noting changes like the seed sprouting roots and tiny green shoots appearing.
Through this experiment, the students discovered what plants need to grow and how life begins from a tiny seed. They also practiced recording their observations by drawing pictures and writing about what they saw.
“We have been planting seeds. We can see sprouts appearing and on some of them we can see leaves.” - Guntas 2C
“We were planting seeds and we kept them on the windows because it is sunny so they started to grow. When we left them for a while, pink and black dots appeared and the bean started to grow and turn green.” - Ava 2C
“Our beans are growing, growing and growing. Hudson’s bean has grown a stem.” Zoe 2A
“Our beans are growing roots and it has lots of green at the top of it. The root of my bean is five fingers long.” Maggie 2A
“The root of my bean plant is six fingers long.” Georgia 2A
“Hudson’s bean has been growing so much. It is 4 fingers long and it has leaves on it.” Lucas 2A
“I like how we are learning about lifecycles and drawing pictures about it.” Jamari 2A
Auslan
This fortnight in Auslan, Year 2 students have been building their signing skills by learning a variety of everyday topics.
They have explored signs for colours, introduced themselves by signing their names, and practised numbers with growing confidence. Students have also enjoyed signing farm animals and are now extending their learning to include signs for different rooms and common objects around the house.
Each lesson is helping them strengthen their communication and deepen their understanding of Auslan in fun and practical ways.
Social and Emotional Learning
Year 2 students have been learning about respect and what it looks like, sounds like, and feels like in our classroom and playground. They enjoyed sharing their ideas through discussions and worked together to create colourful posters that remind everyone how to show respect to others. This activity helped students understand the importance of kindness, listening, and caring for each other.
“In SEL we are learning about respect what it feels like, it feels happy where you can feel safe. It feels comfortable. I enjoyed creating the Y chart. It was fun. I also drew a picture to go with it.” - Amy 2A
“In SEL we are learning about respect, when you are helping someone, for example when someone has no one to play with you can play with them.” Lucas 2A
“In SEL we were learning about respect. We wrote what respect is and how we show respect.” Indy 2A
“We have been learning about respect and we used some words that was how it feels like
One of the good words was protected, smart and brave.” Zareen 2A
Special Event
Each year, a pair of peregrine falcons make their nest high above the city skyline on a skyscraper in Collins Street, and their journey is shared with the world through a 24-hour live stream. This year, the falcons have laid three eggs, sparking excitement as students tune in to watch the incredible process unfold. From the careful dedication of the parent birds to the anticipation of hatching, the live stream provides a rare and fascinating glimpse into the life cycle of these remarkable creatures.
