Platypus Classroom

Literacy
We've had a very interesting fortnight in literacy researching the historical events which led to the extinction of the thylacine in Tasmania. Students have been applying their developing knowledge of authority to check the credibility of texts used to inform their writing. When reflecting on events that led to the extinction of the thylacine, they have explored how their own perspectives may differ from their peers as well as those from the past. Students are currently using their research to write a historical recount of the extinction of the thylacine. We look forward to sharing them with our parents before the end of term!
Maths
In maths, students have begun tackling the 7 times tables. These are the trickiest times tables to learn. Students are working on strategies such as skip counting, using a known fact and splitting seven into smaller parts like 5 and 2 and then regrouping.
Our teaching focus this fortnight has been on identifying the properties of 2D shapes and calculating area and perimeter. Students in stage 3 are beginning to develop rules for calculating the area of parallelograms and triangles, while students in stage 2 are exploring how different shapes with the same area can have different perimeters.
