Hello VPS families, and welcome to the Numeracy section of the Nurlendi News! This is where we’ll share exciting resources, fun games, and practical ideas and updates you can enjoy at home with your children to support their mathematical learning.

World of Maths Incursion - Numeracy Week 2025

WORLD OF MATHS

Numeracy Week is coming to Vermont Primary School!

One of the highlights will be the World of Maths incursion for all students from Foundation to Year 6.

The two main purposes of the World of Maths sessions are:

1) Solving problems from a given situation on each activity

2) Serves as a guided discovery lesson where your students will discover and identify many mathematical concepts and ideas in a fun environment.

During the session students will analyse mathematical problems through investigation, comparison and reflection. Your child will work in small teams to discuss and record possible answers. Students have worksheets to keep on task and record answers.

Your child will attend on either November 20, 21 or 24. Payment details are on Compass.

Year One Maths

This term the Year Ones have been looking at Place Value and Measurement. In Place Value, we have looked at renaming large numbers using tens and ones, and understanding how many bundles equal hundreds. We have also been looking at number lines and determining the position of numbers on a number line. In Measurement, we have been measuring and comparing length and mass using informal units like paper clips, Unifix and icy pole sticks.

Maths Riddles

Here are some Halloween themed Maths Riddles...see how many you can solve!

The monster’s party has 12 cupcakes. If each child eats 3 cupcakes, how many children can eat before the cupcakes are all gone?

A haunted house ticket costs 5 coins. You have 20 coins. How many tickets can you buy?

There are 14 spooky lights. You switch off 6 of them. What fraction of the lights is still on? (Give the fraction in simplest form.)

A skeleton has 206 bones. A giant skeleton has 4 times as many bones! But 98 of the giant’s bones crumble to dust. How many bones does the giant have now?

Four friends collect 324 lollies altogether on Halloween night. If they share them equally, how many lollies does each friend get?

There are 12 classrooms in Ghost School, and each has 18 ghost students. If ⅓ of the ghosts vanish before roll call, how many ghosts remain?
