Boorowa Touch & Netball Carnival a Huge Success!

Last Friday, Boorowa once again came alive for the annual Touch, Netball Carnival, and what a day it was!

With perfect weather, lush green fields thanks to the rain in the lead-up, and a massive turnout of high school students, parents, and friends to help run the carnival, the day was a huge success from start to finish.

Across the day, an incredible 489 games of touch football and 396 games of netball were played — a true testament to the scale of this much-loved event. The carnival ran smoothly thanks to the amazing teamwork and effort of our volunteers, referees, and umpires who kept the games moving all day long.

The canteen and coffee stands were flat out from early morning right through to the final whistle, raising a significant amount of money for our P&Cs. These funds will go straight back into supporting our students through improved resources and subsidised excursions — making the effort more than worthwhile.

All feedback from parents, schools, and participants was overwhelmingly positive, with many commenting on how well-organised and enjoyable the day was.

A huge thank you to everyone involved — our staff, students, parents, referees, umpires, and community members. It was another fantastic example of what makes Boorowa such a special place to live and learn.

INFANTS

Welcome back to Term 4 to all our students and their families! This term is always a fun and very busy term with all the end of year activities, holidays and Christmas. To help prevent missing out on anything, please keep a close eye out for information on Compass and in the Newsletter regularly.

Our Kindergarten Transition program has kicked off already with students and their families joining us for an Orientation Day on Friday 17 October. We are very excited to be welcoming them back for their first real ‘taste’ of ‘big school’ over the next few Fridays. Our Year 5 students are looking forward to finding out who their ‘Buddy’ will be, and our Kindergarten students are excited to be not the youngest at school anymore. The first Kindy-start morning is this Friday, 31 October.

Our Infants Excursion to Canberra is coming up in late November. Please remember to check ‘Events’ on Compass to find out more information and complete the permission note if you haven’t already. Please contact the school if you have any questions.

Term 4 is when our ‘No Hat, Play in the Shade’ mantra comes back into play. Please remember to send a named school bucket hat to school each day. Thank you.

Last Friday when just about the whole town was having fun at the Touch Netball Carnival, there were a few of us living our best school lives back at school. Kindergarten and Year 1 were ‘Kings and Queens’ of the school and had the best day making the most of having the school to themselves! A highlight was a special treasure hunt organised by Mrs Riles, with the Kings and Queens solving riddles to find the hidden treasure, and then great fun sharing a cool treat at the end of the day!

Kindy/Year 1

Term 4 is really all about continuing to develop and consolidate our reading and writing skills, building our number capacity and developing our independence in learning tasks in preparation for the next stage of learning. Students are working daily on focusing for longer periods, developing strategies to help problem solve themselves and staying on task without being distracted by others. There is still so much to learn over the last 8 weeks of term, so being focused and ready to learn is a key skill.

We have a big focus on writing during Term 4, with students being encouraged to challenge themselves to write more than 1 or 2 sentences. They are also building their ability to check their work and make sure it can be read by someone else – they are quickly learning the importance of taking the time to write neat letters and remember finger spaces. We also have a whole school writing focus on correct use of punctuation and our K/1 class as the capital letter and full stop champions!

Our Mathematics focus has been on measurement and we have used our body, including our arm span to measure things longer and shorter than our own arm span

and explored the mass of different grocery items. Many students were surprised at how heavy a bag of groceries can be! Over the next fortnight we will be looking at finding halves, making equal shares and learning to estimate.

Year 1/2

The Year 1/2 students have had a busy and exciting start to Term 4! Alongside our classroom learning, we’ve enjoyed several special events across the school, including the Touch Football & Netball Carnival, cricket sessions with Geoff from Gecko Sports, and a very special visit from Healthy Harold!

The Touch Football & Netball Carnival was a first for our Year 2 students — and what a fantastic day it was! The students played four games of touch football at the showground and showed outstanding teamwork, sportsmanship, and growth mindset throughout the day. Learning a new sport can be tricky, but our Year 2s took on every challenge with enthusiasm and a smile!

Meanwhile, our Year 1 students had their own fun-filled day back at school. Mrs Riles organised an exciting treasure hunt that helped us explore our school values — Respect, Responsibility, and Participation — and it ended with a surprise... icy poles waiting in her office freezer!

We’ve also been learning the fundamentals of cricket with Geoff from Gecko Sports. The students have loved practising their batting, throwing, and fielding skills!

On Tuesday, we had a visit from everyone’s favourite giraffe, Healthy Harold! Students learned about building and maintaining strong, healthy friendships. Harold’s silly antics brought plenty of giggles to the van!

A highlight of our term so far has been cooking with Mrs Corcoran! The students made spooky “mummy” raspberry jam pastries as a fun Halloween treat — they tasted (and smelled) amazing!

Our little mathematicians have been exploring strategies for solving multiplication and division problems and have now begun their new unit on measurement, discovering all the different ways we can measure the world around us.

In English, we’ve been inspired by The Gentle Genius of Trees by Philip Bunting. Students have been writing persuasively about the importance of trees, using facts to support their opinions. We also learned how to use visual elements and anthropomorphism to make our writing come alive — giving trees and animals human characteristics like facial expressions and speech!

Here are a few favourite tree facts from our class:🌳 Polly: “My favourite fact about trees is that they breathe in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen, which helps us breathe too!”🌳 Zoe: “Trees help to make clouds by sucking up water from the ground with their roots and sending it into the air.”🌳 Louis: “A tree’s roots make a brain for the tree!”🌳 Toby C: “A tree’s roots can be four times wider than the tree itself!”

We are eagerly looking forward to our Year 1/2 Feather Celebration coming up this week! We can’t wait to share photos and highlights of this highly anticipated event with you all in our next update!

Year 2/3

Year 2/3 have had an exciting start to the term, in English we are reading '200 minutes of danger', the stories are keeping us on the edge of our seats wondering what is gong to happen next. We are continuing to work on improving our reading fluency through daily practice and reading aloud in pairs. In Maths we have been learning all about fractions, we have even started to work out equivalent fractions, and how to add fractions together. This week we are moving on to brush up on our multiplication skills. In PDHPE, we have been talking about social justice and thinking about what's fair and what's not. Our Science lessons on growing and changing have taken us into the world of Peter Pan, where we have been discussing if it would be fun to never grow up. We have been enjoying our Gecko sport sessions learning cricket skills, ready for our summer cricket matches. All students enjoyed their day at the carnival last Friday playing Touch Football or Netball, there were lots of smiles and excitement throughout the whole day. We have also had a lovely visit this week with Healthy Harold talking about friends and feelings and how to be a good friend to others.
