Summer Inter-School Sport Division Finals
Hot Shots Tennis – Girls
On the 13th October we competed in the Monash Waverley Division Hot Shots finals. We competed against Mount Waverley PS, Mount View PS, Glen Waverley PS, Oakleigh PS and Huntingtower. Our team did an amazing job and tried our best. We did so well winning four out of the five matches and placed second overall. We were happy with the outcome but only the winners go onto compete at region.
Shoutout to our team: Lauren, Danielle, Ava, Elena, Lara, Isla, Reeshita, Emily, Desiree, Eva and Katerina. Also, a big shoutout to Ms Hocking, Danielle Jones, Nathan Hocking and the parents who came to support us and cheer.
Elena & Lauren, Year 6
Hot Shots Tennis – Boys
Our team came second in the District competition so then we headed to the Monash Waverley Division Hot Shots event. It was a pretty intense day for all of us. We played against six different schools. It wasn’t just about how you played your match because we had to win overall as a team. We improved each match by talking to each other in doubles matches, trying new strategies and keeping our cool when the pressure was on.
By the end of the day, we were tired but seeing how far we pushed ourselves and still stuck together as a team felt absolutely incredible. We were all super proud of placing second!
We would also like to say thanks on behalf of the whole team to Ms Hocking. She coached us, cheered for us and guided us the whole way through. Without her hard work and organising, we would never have had this awesome opportunity to compete and get so much better.
Congratulations to the whole team!
Nick N & Hayden, Year 6
Boys Volleyball
On Monday 13th October we competed in the Monash Waverley Division Volleyball finals. We played against St Peter’s, Mount Waverley North PS, Mount View PS and Brandon Park PS. We won two out of the four matches and showed great teamwork.
Thanks to Miss Kemp for coaching and supporting us. Also, thanks to our parents for driving us to the event. We had lots of fun.

Basketball – Girls
On the 16th of October our girls’ basketball team went to Nunawading Stadium to play in the Monash Waverley Division finals against four other schools. We came runners up in our pool then beat Mount Scopus in the semifinal. We played Mount View in the final and unfortunately lost by one point! We tried our best and overall, it was an amazing experience.
Thank you to Ms Hocking for organising this opportunity and thanks to Miss Kemp for coaching us. Shout out to our team: Emmeline, Danielle, Valerie, Milly, Elena, Desiree, Amali and Nilani for getting to this stage.
Danielle & Valerie, Year 6
Region Hoop Time Basketball Finals – Girls’ Future Team
On Wednesday 15th October we competed at Region Hoop Time finals at the State Basketball Stadium. Our team included Zanika, Ella, Mehar, Maggie, Isabelle, Tanisha, Jacqueline and Grace.
It was a really tough and long day and all the players were very skilled and exceptionally tall! We played a total of five games and won one. But we still persisted through the day and tried our absolute best. After our five matches we still had some hope of making it to the qualifying finals but unfortunately, we didn’t win enough games.
We would like to say a huge thanks to Ms Hocking and her son Nathan for coaching us and also our parents for driving and supporting us. It was a really fun day and an enjoyable experience. We hope to do it again next year!
Jacqueline, Zanika & Ella F, Year 5

Individual Events:
Josh C, Year 6
I just competed in my last Region sporting event for Essex Heights. I feel very proud that I have been able to represent Essex Heights in a number of sporting events over the years and last Thursday was no exception.
I raced the 1500 metre event and placed 7th out of about 15 people, which was a personal improvement from last year. It was a tough race, and I am very grateful that I had my Dad and Ms Hocking there to support me.
I look forward to coming back to Essex Heights after I graduate at the end of the year to hear about all their future sporting success. I feel very privileged to have had so many opportunities to represent the school over my time here. I strongly recommend getting involved in all you can when the opportunities arise because it has enabled me to make lots of friends, build resilience and taught me to never give up.
A special thanks to Ms Hocking for her dedication to Essex Heights Sport and her consistent support of myself and others.
Jayan C, Year 6
I competed in two events at the Eastern Metro Region Athletics competition on the 23rd of October. My events were long jump and 200m. It was a really hard day because I felt so nervous. Despite not making it to State, I was happy to participate and I was really proud to represent Essex Heights at this competition with other great athletes.
Thank you to Ms Hocking for all her support and doing things like taking us through lunchtime training. There is a lot of work put into helping all of us be our best. Thank you to my parents, particularly my Dad, and my coach for all their time and effort too.
Amali C, Year 5
I competed in the Eastern Metro Region Athletics competition on the 23rd of October in shot put. It was a really tough competition and everyone tried really hard in the shot put. Despite coming off an injury that stopped me from practicing in the days before the event, I put in a great effort and ended up coming first! So, I will be going onto the State competition next month, which I’m really looking forward to.
Congratulations to our whole Essex Heights team who made it into this region competition because it was a huge achievement in itself. Even if you did not progress to the State competition, we all put in an amazing effort.
I would love to give Ms Hocking a big shout out for all her support in making us the athletes we are now. I also want to thank my parents for their love and support too.
Marcus O, Year 6
On the 23rd of October, I competed at the Eastern Region which was held at the Tom Kelly Athletics Track in Doncaster East. I competed in the triple jump event. Triple jump is an athletic event which involves a lead up run of approximately 15 metres and then you hop, skip and jump as far as you can. The ultimate winner is determined by who can jump the furthest.
I was really excited, but nervous at the same time. I knew it was going to be really competitive as there were 16 athletes competing in my event, so I needed to jump my very best to make it.
On my first jump, I was really nervous as everyone was jumping really far. Unfortunately, I fouled. On my second jump, I jumped as far as I could and achieved a high score of 8.12 metres. On my last attempt, I jumped as far as I could achieving a personal best (PB) of 8.52 metres. Unfortunately, I didn’t place in the top two, but I was still really proud of myself as it was a tough journey to get here.
I would like to thank Ms Hocking for me cheering the whole time I was at my event and my Dad for driving me.
Congratulations to all of the other students who competed at Region.
Grace D, Year 6
On the 23rd of October, I was one of the nine people who competed in the Eastern Metropolitan Region event. My event was the 11-year-old girls triple jump. There was lots of people, and there was a lot of tough competitors, but I tried hard and did my best. Sadly, I did not make it to State, but I am proud of myself competing at region. A big thank you to Ms. Hocking for supporting and helping me, and also to my parents who drove me there and made it possible.
Relay Team
Travis M, Year 4
I competed at the Region Athletics Championships in the 4x100m relay team with Karas, Will and Nicko. I was really nervous and excited at the same time. Overall, our team placed fifth and I was very proud of our performance. I would like to say a big thank you to Ms Hocking and Miss Kemp for training us. Thank you also to Ms Hocking for helping us warm up and for cheering us on. Thanks to my Mum for driving me, supporting our team and for buying me a hot dog!
Will L, Year 5
I competed in the relay at the Region Athletics. I had a great time and tried my best. Thank you to my family for coming to cheer for us on the day.
Nicko P, Year 4
When I got to the sports ground, I was very excited to run with my friends. When it was my turn to run, I was nervous, but I ran pretty fast, even though we didn’t make it the state. I enjoyed the experience with my friends.
Karas G, Year 4
We had to wait a while as the relays were late starting. We were in the very last relay race and we all tried our best.
3X3 State Championships
On the school holidays I competed in the Basketball Victoria 3X3 State Championships. In 3X3 you have four players on each team, and three players on the court which means you have one sub.
In January my team won the 3x3 Nunawading A Grade Tournament. Then my team was invited to the 3x3 Waverley State Qualifier Competition. Luckily my team won the Grand Final by six points. We were very happy we earned our spot in the State Championships.
We got to play the State Championships at the State Basketball Centre. My team was undefeated and ranked first in our grade. We got into the Top 16 finals and won a very hard game which progressed us to the quarter finals. Sadly we lost by two points but our final ranking was sixth in Victoria.
It was a great experience and I hope to be there again next year. And I would like to say a big thank you to Scott who was my Coach, and my Mum for being our team manager.
Travis M, 34M
