Melbourne Cup
The Melbourne Cup recently visited TPS. Students discovered the Cup is sold gold and is worth a massive $600,000. Some students were given the opportunity to handle the cup and in the process had to wear special white gloves. Students were encouaged to dress uo for the ocassion. There will silks, hats, hobby horses, pearls and loads of colour. Fashions on the Field were a great success with the winners from each year level receiving a sash.
Grade 5 Camp
Grade 5 students had a wonderful and very active time at their Lord Somers Camp on the Mornington Peninsula. Activities included pizza making, t-shirt screen printing, kyacking, beach olympics, orienteering, bush walking plus more... Delicious food was served, the highlight being Moroccan chicken. Evening activites included a movie night and a very entertaining trivia night. All students came home very happy and extremely tired!
Interschool Chess
The Chess Victoria 2023 Primary Open School Finals were held at Mordialloc College on Thursday 9 November 2023. A total of 191 players from 28 schools competed (average ~7 players per school). Five players from Toorak Primary School (TPS) participated based on their performance at Chess Victoria Zonal Inter-school Tournaments earlier in the year: Arya (Grade 6), Rubsy (Grade 4), Telek (Grade 4), Jacob (Grade 3), and Lachlan (Grade 5). Each player competed in 7 rounds with progressively matched difficulty, i.e. players were paired with
stronger opponents as they won, and difficulty levels were reduced in case of losses.
Each TPS chess player competed very well and collectively TPS earned 18.5 points and achieved a school ranking of 15 of 28. This is a
commendable performance considering the finals attract the most talented players and
schools from all across Victoria (e.g. Ballarat
Clarendon College & Apollo Parkways Primary School) and the winning two schools had over 10 players each competing (a reason to encourage more TPS students to play chess!). Glendal Primary School will Represent Victoria in the 2023 Australian Schools’ Teams Championships (ASTC) in Adelaide in early December 2023. Thanks to Felix Chandler, Mindful Chess for putting forward TPS to
attend the Chess Victoria Finals.
