Grade 5 - 6
Reading
The students have begun the term with the book Fire written by Jackie French, they have spent time learning new vocabulary and delving deeper into the science of reading. They began learning about base words and how by adding affixes to words it changes the meaning of the word and created a new word. They looked into why the author and illustrator have created the pictures that aligned with the story that is being told.
Writing
The students have been writing narratives, they have so far thought about their main character and the setting that they will be using. They have also begun writing a plan for the narrative, ensuring that they have all the key elements required to complete their stories. The focus for the narratives has been mythical and magical stories, we can’t wait to see what types of stories are created in the coming weeks.
Maths
The students have been focusing on decimals over the past two weeks, this time has been used to consolidate their prior knowledge and embark on new learnings. They have been completing many different tasks in small groups and having fun through learning with the aid of games to assist with their prior knowledge.
Humanities
The 5/6 cohort have commenced the unit on Business and Economics, they learned about goods and services. This allowed for them to have in depth conversations about which companies in Australia and world wide offer one or both of these business elements. Grade 6 Camp
40 grade 6 students headed off the CYC Forest Edge on Tuesday 17th of October, this was an exciting time for all involved. This was the first time that any Grayling Primary School students had attended this location. They stayed until Friday 20th of October and participated in many different activities, these activities included rock climbing, flying fox – it was 312 metres long and the 2nd longest flying fox in Victoria. They also played disk golf, built huts, climbed on low ropes and participated in archery, there were many more fun activities throughout the four days.
