Grade 1
Reading:
This fortnight, students in Grade 1 have continued using a mentor text to help develop their reading skills. Students have been exploring new pages in the book each day and using the text and images to help support their comprehension skills. Students have been loving the conversations that have been happening and learning new words that they can add to their vocabulary. The mentor texts chosen have been Persuasive texts to link in with our Writing focus this term.
The mentor text we are currently reading is called “ Don’t Let The Pigeon Drive The Bus” by Mo Willems. During their fluency pairs, students have enjoyed engaging in Reader’s Theatre. They have been able to practise reading their scripts with expression. The Grade 1 students can look forward to exploring lots of new and exciting mentor texts throughout the term!
Writing:
In our Grade 1 writing journey, we've been delving into the exciting world of persuasive writing. Our young writers have been learning how to power up their sentences with adjectives, making their words more convincing and delightful. To kickstart their persuasive pieces, we've embraced the art of a "sizzling start" by posing intriguing questions in our introductions. Last week, our students took on the challenging task of convincing Mr. Abdallah that our class needs a furry or feathery friend. Their letters overflowed with enthusiasm, and they've made compelling arguments for why a class pet would be a fantastic addition to our learning adventures.
Maths:
In Maths, students have been busy exploring a range of written and mental strategies they can use to answer addition and subtraction problems. These strategies include drawing pictures, using tens frames, number lines and more.
This term we have introduced entry tickets in Maths. Students have been eagerly answering three questions based on previous lessons. These entry tickets provide valuable information regarding student progress and have quickly become an important part of our Maths lessons.
