Celebrating our 100-year-old community
Rob French, Principal
The conclusion of our centenary year leaves me feeling incredibly proud and even more connected to this special Kilvington community. Our program of events and activities was designed to give the many groups within our community, including students, staff, parents, past students and staff, and friends, the opportunity to celebrate this memorable milestone.
The year kicked-off with a lovely Centenary Morning Tea in February, followed by our magnificent Centenary Fair in March. Both of these events set the scene for a celebratory year ahead.
Then in June, we gathered at the magnificent St Paul’s Cathedral in Melbourne for our Foundation Day Service. It was wonderful to see a large number of parents and Kilvonians in attendance as we paid tribute to our courageous founders. These visionary individuals made some incredibly brave decisions in the early 1920s, setting in motion a sequence of events that have led to us enjoying our school as we know it today.
We also took the opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of former principals, board members, staff members and students, who, through their own unwavering commitment, have helped to shape the School and build the unique and cherished culture that Kilvington is known for.
In August, our Centenary Concert was performed at the iconic Hamer Hall. Current and past students and staff joined us to deliver unforgettable and outstanding performances. An original song written for the occasion, titled 'We Are Only Getting Started', made its debut performance.
In September, we held our Centenary Gala Dinner with a Great Gatsby theme. Parents, former staff and students dressed up in 1920s fashion and enjoyed a spectacular evening of celebration and fun.
In October, we conducted a special ceremony in our new Centenary Garden, which had been designed earlier in the year by our Maintenance team. This event marked the burial of a Time Capsule which holds mementos from our ELC to Year 12 students and Walsh Club alumni – former students from more than 50 years ago. The capsule will remain sealed until 2048 when the community at that time will get a snapshot of how it was at Kilvington in 2023.
At the time of writing, our final event of the year is our Celebration Night. During this occasion, we will acknowledge students for their efforts throughout the year, farewell our Year 12s, and weave in special touches to honour our incredible 100-year history.
