Food, Mood and Learning Outcomes

Hi Families,

I’m going to be honest. As we head towards the end of the year, I’m finding my days are getting busier and as a result I’ve noticed that my lunches that I’m bringing to school each day are getting worse, let’s just say a pack of biscuits isn’t exactly inspiring!

Can you relate? I’m sure I’m not the only one this is happening to!

Something we know is that food consumed, mood and learning are closely linked

So this week, I’ve done the rounds and some of our student lunchboxes have inspired me.

Here are some of the highlights:

A student in Year 1 opened their lunchbox to a rainbow of fruit and vegetables. She had cherry tomatoes, capsicum and crunchy carrot sticks. All packed with vitamins and antioxidants to keep her feeling fresh and energised.

One of our Year 4 students came with lunch that packed a punch! She had grilled chicken, hummus, whole-grain pita, and a handful of almonds. These choices kept her satisfied!

I was impressed when I walked through one of our Foundation rooms and saw someone with a quinoa salad. Quinoa is full of protein and fibre and this student had mixed it with some of his favourite veggies and olive oil. Delish!

Something I saw in many lunchboxes was a touch of sweetness added by simply including some fresh fruits. I saw many examples of berries, apple slices, grapes and bananas.  These options are a great way to satisfy your sweet tooth without compromising on health.
