SCHOOL OF INNOVATION

Wow, here we are in the last week of term 3 already! What a term it has been!

Packed full of learning and many activities the term has flown before our eyes. We are extremely proud of what our students have achieved this term with their continual commitment to strive for success in all aspects of their schooling. We know our students have been well supported in this by the dedicated staff from within the School of Innovation. We wish all of our staff, students and families a happy well earned holiday break, and we look forward to welcoming you all back for another busy term at the College in Term 4.

R U OK DAY Thursday,  September 14

On Thursday, September 14, we observed R U OK DAY within the School of Innovation. Our students actively engaged in lessons and activities dedicated to promoting the key themes of the day. They explored various strategies for seeking help and learned how to initiate crucial conversations with their fellow students who might be in need of extra support. At St. Anne's College, we deeply value the holistic development of our students, encompassing their academic, social, and emotional growth. R U OK DAY is an integral aspect of our commitment to providing a nurturing environment for our students.

Year 5, 2024 Information Session

Thank you to those that attended our first information session for our Year 5 program in 2024. Please note there will be another session early in Term 4, and we will also be presenting to our Year 4 students in preparation for 2024!

What an exciting time!

Year 7

This week in Food Technology students were engaged in the process of making Sausage Rolls. Below are some pictures of the students enjoying their creations!

Dissection of a Bull's eye - Year 8 Science

The Year 8 Science classes have been exploring anatomy by engaging in an experiment where they had to dissect a cow's eye.

The aim was to...

  • Cut the eye in half to study the posterior & anterior sections
  • Remove the cornea
  • Look at the lens
  • Look at the retina
  • Label the structures of the eye
  • Look at how light works

The students were very interested to see the blue colours inside, and enjoyed rolling the lens over a newspaper to read the text.

Graphic warning if you are squeemish!

Click on the link below for a dissection clip.

Year 8s celebrated the end of term in Italian with pizza making.

A handful of Year 8 students got to enjoy the sherbet making process after the Year 7s had had a try.

Year 9

Our final thank you to the guests for the Year 9, "Oh! The Places You'll Go!" inquiry.

- Ken Woodman - Architect

- VLine staff

- Tegan Crawford - Tegan's Custom Cakes

Thank you to all of these individuals who came in!

Even though our inquiry for careers has 'finished' for the term, we would still love to invite any parents/carers/community members who would like to come into the college next term to speak about their career! Please feel free to email Adam Zito on azito@sackialla.catholic.edu.au

Getting a taste for the possibilities that lie beyond school...

Year 7 and 8 students got a taste of what is on offer at La Trobe University on Thursday, September 7 with a presentation titled UniBuddies, in the Black Box.

Presented by representatives from the university, the slideshow informed students about the wide range of courses on offer across its multiple campuses and painted a picture of what to expect in day-to-day life as a Uni student.

In an interactive and fun-filled session, there were plenty of prizes to be won by students who were brave enough to put up their hand to answer questions.

Never mind the tea leaves, what can your imagination conjure up at the bottom of a teacup after enjoying your favourite, warm beverage?

Year 7 Photography students have utilised their creative photography skills to bring their imaginations to life, encapsulating all manner of fantastical possibilities with their Storm in a Team Cup series.

Welcoming Year 5 in 2024

Armed with learning assets and imbued with agency, this year’s cohort of Year 4 students are on the cusp of moving into the School of Innovation (SOI) in 2024.

Having spent five years within the flexible and engaging School of Wonder, connecting interests and passions to learning, next year’s inaugural Year 5 students will further develop and enhance their strategies, tools and techniques to investigate the world, posing questions as they research and thinking deeply about their discoveries.

On Tuesday, September 5, St Anne’s College welcomed 2024's Year 5 families to an information session to find out about the vibrant and stimulating year ahead as well as meet the dedicated learning mentors and SOI leadership team in Rachelle Chapman and Callum Thompson.

Bringing together a wide range of experience as well as a firmly established spirit of collegiate collaboration, next year’s Year 5 learning mentors Andrea Bergamin and Ivy Davidson, were also pleased to meet and chat with families during the session.

You can find out more about the dedicated and passionate 2024, Year 5 learning mentors in their profiles below.

Ivy:

I started my teaching career in 2014 at St Augustine’s College Kyabram. I have taught Foundation, Years 3/4 and 5/6. It was when I was teaching in the 3/4 space that I met Andrea. We taught collaboratively and made a great team.

At my previous school, I was a leader in the digital technologies space. I am passionate about teaching our children to be learners of the 21st century. I believe it is vital that our children develop into critical and creative thinkers who understand how to use technology as a tool for their success.

I am so happy with my decision to continue my career here at St Anne’s and I am looking forward to developing positive relationships with our students going into Year 5 next year.

Andrea:

I started teaching at St Augustines in Kyabram where I worked in the 3/4 team for three years. I then moved to St Annes in 2021 where I taught 1/2 and then moved into the Grade 3 space and now back in 1/2.

I am really excited about teaching our first grade 5s next year and I feel very fortunate to know many children in Year 4, currently having taught them last year and the year before.

Important Pastoral Group Information

At St. Anne’s College, all students within the School of Innovation are allocated to a Pastoral Group. These groups are overseen by a Pastoral Group Leader and currently comprise students from their respective houses: Montessori, Charles, Cooper, and Majella houses.

Each morning, students commence their day within their Pastoral Groups. This time involves participation in morning prayer, a welcome to country, and updates about the day's news and events at the College. This period holds significance in allowing our students to establish strong connections with their peers and their Pastoral Leader. Consequently, our students are able to cultivate a strong sense of community at St. Anne’s College.

Our Pastoral Leaders also seize this opportunity to implement the three core principles of Gratitude, Empathy, and Mindfulness (GEM), which stem from our school-wide program conducted by the Resilience Project. These principles encourage our students to contemplate and recognize the positive facets of their day-to-day experiences both at the College and at home. This practice ensures that our students embark on each day well-prepared for successful learning and meaningful connections with others.

Given that this session only spans 10 minutes each morning, it is imperative that students are punctual and actively participate within their designated Pastoral Groups. If students miss this period or arrive late, they will forfeit this crucial initiation to the school day.

We extend our gratitude to all parents and caregivers for your sustained support in ensuring that this routine is upheld for the continued success of our students.

Important Uniform Information

A reminder that all School of Innovation students are required to wear their academic uniform items each day, except for sports days or other nominated days when their sports uniform items can be worn. Please ensure your student is in their full academic uniform. If this is not possible on a particular day, please send a note, including the date your student will be able to be in full school uniform.

A dress code, in particular a uniform, provides a visual connection to identify students as members of St Anne’s College community. The way a uniform is worn makes a statement about our college and it represents the fact that the student is a part of the community.  The benefits of a school uniform include:

• Allows all students to feel equal

• Helps prevent bullying and competition on the basis of clothing

• Ensures students appearance reflects the expectations of St Anne’s College

• Enhances the profile and identity of the College and its students in the wider community

• Strengthens the spirit of community within St Anne’s College

• Enhances individual student safety and group security

• Ensured all students are dressed safely and appropriately for school activities

• Encourages students to develop pride in their appearance

• Prepares students for the expectations in workplaces

• Encourages students to present themselves appropriately for a particular role

Thank you for your support.
