YEAR 10-12 NEWS

Term 3

Year 10

Congratulations to Year 10 student Tom McAuliffe on winning his leagues U/16 Div 2 medal .

Having a strong year with a prelim final in the u/16s Tom also played the last few games in the U/18s and a cameo appearance in the reserves mid season.

Year 12

Term three is done and only two more weeks of scheduled classes left for our yr 12 cohort – time has really flown fast.

Planning is well in progress for the last term, including celebration day, the final yr 12 college assembly and graduation.

Last week I also emailed parents in relation to a great tradition we have at graduation.  I am asking for a year 7 photo for any students who have joined us since the start of year 7 – just to show how much the students have changed during their secondary school journey. If you have a photo, can you please send it to me via email.

As we go into this break, for those students in VCE, the next couple of weeks is not only a good time to reset but also start preparation for the last push to the exams. One piece of advice from our last ELEVATE session was to spend the next two weeks working like it is still a school week, using the normal school timetable as a guide for which subjects to study and when. Working Monday to Friday, there is enough time for a break, but suddenly there is 60+ hrs of study behind you.

While on the break, several teachers have set times to help students throughout the holidays:

Week 1:

  • Monday 18th: Mr Edmonds – ENGLISH– 10:00 – 12:00

Week 2:

  • Tuesday 26th:
    • Mr Edmonds – ENGLISH – 10:00 – 12:00
  • Thursday 28th
    • Mr Bullock – CHEMISTRY – 9:00 – 10:45
    • Mr Anawati -  GENERAL MATHS – 11:00 – 1:00
    • Mr Anawati -  PHYSICS – 1:30 – 3:00

Have a safe and relaxing break!

TERM 3 IN VCE-VOCATIONAL MAJOR

BEACON IMPACT PROGRAM

As part of Work-Related Skills Unit, Year 11 VCE-Vocational Major students participated in a careers program ran by the Beacon Foundation. Students learnt about employability skills and how they can transfer the skills they gain at school and apply them to a workplace setting. Students listened to a panel of employees from V/Line learning about the transport industry and numerous jobs within the company. After a lovely lunch, the students completed ‘mock interviews’, focusing on their ability to promote their skills to potential employers.

PAT CRONIN FOUNDATION

All the VCE-VM and Senior VCAL students participated in the ‘Be Wise’ program ran by the Pat Cronin Foundation. Students learnt about the impacts of conflict and violence in large groups settings. They developed strategies to empower them to make good decisions to stop violence and end the coward punch.

INDUSTRY IMMERSION DAY – HOSPITALITY

All the VCE-VM and Senior VCAL students participated in a hospitality industry visit to The Range (Curlewis), Leura Park Estate and Flying Brick Cider Co. Students toured each venue and learnt about jobs, staff career journeys, and what they look for in potential employees. Students took part in fun games, taking the role of a waiter/waitress trying to carry 3 plates at a time. The highlight of the day for most students was when they got to taste Korean cauliflower and non-alcoholic apple cider.

FATHER’S DAY SCHOOL AND PIZZA LUNCH

Senior VCAL students spent time this term making mugs, spice rubs, blankets cheese boards, and other gifts for the Father’s Day stall held in the library. Year 7 and 8 students were invited to purchase a special gift for loved one. Students also ran a homemade pizza lunch raising money to extend the West Café.

DESIGN TO THRIVE

Senior VCAL students participated in an agricultural pilot program ran by the Geelong Tech School where students explored the companies Common Ground Project and Boomaroo Nursery. Students learnt about each business touring the venues and helping on the farm. Once students became familiar with the businesses, they identified the potential problems that each business is facing. Students used the Design Thinking process to brainstorm possible solutions to the identified problem and create a prototype that they presented back to their chosen business.

VCAL DAY CAMP

The Senior VCAL students spent a day exploring Lorne and the Otway’s, bonding as a class and celebrating the near conclusion of their secondary schooling. Students planned the day themselves, taking into consideration the needs of the group and the cost of the activities. Students spent the day fishing off the pier – where Mr. Beasley was the only one to catch a fish, conquering their fears at Livewire Park, walking to a stunning waterfall, cooking a BBQ dinner, roasting marshmallows on an open campfire and singing their hearts out in the bus. The students would like to thank Mr. Beasley, Ms. Scorringe and Ms. Dickson for coming on their trip.

WEST CAFÉ

The West Café has successfully ran this term on a Tuesday, Thursday and Friday recess. The VCE-VM and Senior VCAL students take in turns running the café, providing staff and students with hot beverages, a selection of slices and muffins and the famous toasted ham and cheese croissants. Students have complete ownership of the café, deciding and baking the weekly specials, balancing daily takings, ensuring safe OHS is adhered to and beginning to create an inviting space for people to gather.
