Sports Update

Daryl Porter, H&PE/Sports Coordinator F-12

Term 3 has been very busy in Sports!

To name a few things...

  • Many of our units being taught (on and off site)
  • Representative events being prepared for
  • Various Carnival competitions across the State
  • As usual, continued opportunities for students to get involved in ways to be active including coaching, scoring and officiating weekly matches

Junior School Basketball on Monday nights

Our Junior School Monday night Basketball Development program for students from Brooklyn Park and South Plympton has been a huge success. We’ve seen the students develop their ability and knowledge of the game. We are looking forward to preparing them for other school teams and competitions in years to come.

Basketball SA Refereeing Course for Middle School Students

We have partnered with Basketball SA to conduct a Refereeing Course that educates students about the rules and technicalities of the sport and to officiate matches in a supportive environment. This officiating opportunity has been very successful with many of our Middle School students growing in confidence both in their knowledge and ability. It has been a pleasure to observe students improve from match to match.

SA Church Winter Season

College Basketball teams competing in the SA Church Winter Season is ending soon with some of our teams reaching the finals, commencing Saturday 9 September. We wish our teams all the best and congratulate all the teams who have already played, especially those who have played an up-age, challenging themselves by playing more experienced players. Thank you to all Coaches, Team Managers and parents who have helped to manage players and supporting teams on match days.

Junior School Soccer Season

Our Junior School Soccer season has now finished with their final match being played over the weekend. Our coaches have done a magnificent job in supporting all our players and families, attending trainings and matches each week. Their hard work has ensured that our young people had the opportunity to participate with their friends in a healthy active lifestyle. Thank you also, to all family spectators who have attended matches in rain, hail (minimal times this year) and sunshine. Their support from the sidelines after a goal, near miss or care of the players after a fall has been appreciated. These are moments that many will remember for years to come.

College Representative Teams

This term, our College representative teams have taken part in Basketball, Badminton and Netball ranging from Years 3-10 and from both Campuses. Although achieving results is nice, they are not the most important element for our College when we compete. The most important aspect for our College is to develop a positive sporting culture. We hope to educate our students about good sportsmanship, healthy camaraderie, and growth mindset. These are traits that last a lifetime both within the sporting context and beyond.

Character Traits our students have demonstrated

Some traits that have been evident this term were:

  • Commitment - We had 96% of Year 7/8 and 9/10 students attend before-school morning practices, followed by a shared breakfast which helped to prepare them for the rest of their academic day.
  • Community – We have a dedicated community of students, coaches and staff have shown a high level of commitment by attending the many sessions and breakfasts. They have taken part in friendly discussions and showed care for one another despite being in a different year levels or positions.
  • Belonging - Students would support and cheer for one another at training, matches and inbetween matches, at carnivals, offer an ear to listen or offer some words of praise and encouragement to help them move on and try again.

Coaches, teachers and parents/caregivers can only say so much to students/players, but the positive influence that student peers can have only helps to further build up a person rather than bring down (which we only see too often in our society today).

Well done to all who were a part of these programs, squads and teams to date this term, and we hope to hear of more students joining week to week competitions helping to improve their abilities living an active and enjoyable lifestyle.

H&PE Curriculum Update

Year 3/4 Gymnastics at Brooklyn Park

The Year 3/4 students at Brooklyn Park have recently engaged in a variety of enjoyable and fun Gymnastics lessons at the Western Youth Community Centre. The lessons have been conducted by qualified Gymnastic coaches.

Students were able to utilise specialised gymnastics equipment such as wide and narrow balance beams, roman rings, parallel and horizontal bars, and a wooden climbing frame. Their gymnastic coaches gave each student individualised instruction and feedback that allowed them to progress and challenge them to understand their body coordination, movements and awareness. Students have improved being able to better execute refined movement sequences and challenge themselves with more complex sequences and movement patterns. Students had fun and engaged safely in their learning. They are  excited to increase and refine their gymnastic abilities in the future.

Year 8 Table Tennis

Year 8 students have been taking part in Table Tennis and seeing the level of improvement through persistence and asking for help. Students have used technological means to review and refine their performances which has helped them achieve personal success. We were pleased to see students bring in their own equipment for this unit.

Year 9 H&PE classes

Year 9 H&PE classes will soon be moving offsite to Touch SA. Students will learn this simple sport that can be played in single and mixed gender teams at a social and higher level. Main individual skills of the sport are simply run, pass and catch. Building from these are the specific sport tactics, strategies, positional requirements, and the need for all players to work with and support one another to learn and develop. Students are beginning to see how much fitness is required in the sport as well as the need to help one another to achieve success rather than relying on one person.

Year 10 PE classes

Year 10 PE classes have completed their Basketball unit. Students who persisted and received feedback well, showed the most improvement. Well done to students from both classes who commenced their Squash unit held at Somerton Park Squash Centre. Students who have transferable skills and knowledge from previous years in the H&PE unit and show initiative will set themselves up for success. It’s been pleasing to see the high level of improvement over a short time.
