Year 10 Geography Excursion to Kangaroo Island

The Year 10 Geography class spent Monday 28 - Wednesday 30 August visiting Kangaroo Island (KI) to investigate opportunities and issues which tourism can bring to natural landscapes and communities. The group were confronted by major environmental challenges facing the island, including the management of the controversial Tasmanian Blue Gum plantations, the Feral Cat eradication program and bushfire regeneration.

Students learned from many leading experts who shared insights into wildlife conservation, sustainable tourism and park management. We left with a deeper appreciation of the different perspectives on how KI’s challenges should be addressed.

Highlights of the camp included a visit to Flinders Chase National Park, a guided beach tour at Seal Bay, Little Sahara Sand Boarding and Stokes Bay which claimed the Best Australian Beach award for 2023.

"This year's Year 10 Geography camp was one to remember! We drove around the Island visiting popular tourist destinations such as Seal Bay and Flinders Chase National Park. We learnt from experts  about the natural areas and problems they face and how they plan to be sustained for the future, like the regeneration programs in place for the bushland devastated by the 2019 fires. We learned a lot from our insightful bus driver, Hamish, who pointed out the wildlife as we drove past and taught us all about the Island's natural history and the challenges that the island faces, such as the eradication of feral cats from the island and the heavy biosecurity rules the island has in place.

Overall, this camp experience informed us lots about Australia's third largest island, and is one I guarantee future year levels will enjoy."

"The Kangaroo Island trip for Geography was a very exciting experience. Some main highlights were visiting Seal Bay, Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch in Flinders Chase. Seal Bay was a very exciting place as we were able to stand really close to wild seals. The view of Seal Bay from a high point was also stunning. Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch in the Flinders Chase was also a great experience. It was very windy which made it even more exciting. The views were extraordinary! In Admirals Arch you could also see Australian Fur seals which was very exciting. We were accompanied by many experts to help us with our main topic about sustainable tourism."

Volunteer Interviewers needed for the Year 11 Mock Job Interview Program

Each year, Emmaus Christian College provides a Mock Job Interview Program for Year 11 students. We are seeking additional volunteers to play the role of an employer to interview the students to support them in this important Work Education opportunity.

Students will come prepared to 'apply’ for a job (either one provided or one that interests them) with their resume and cover letter to the interview.

Mock Job Interviews will be held at Emmaus Christian College South Plympton Campus at the following times:

Friday 22 September

8.45am - 11.45am (Shift 1)

12pm - 3.10pm (Shift 2)

Friday 29 September

8.45am - 11.45am (Shift 1)

12pm - 3.10pm (Shift 2)

We will provide supporting materials to interviewers prior to the day and hold a short induction session at the start of the session including some guidelines and question examples to support specific student outcomes.

Volunteer interviewers will carry out individual interviews with 6-7 students and record feedback to assist students in specific areas. Tea and coffee will also be provided.

Please consider supporting our Year 11 Work Education Program.

To register your interest, please fill in the form  by Sunday 10 September.

Year 11 Drama Students Tour of Her Majesty's Theatre

Year 11 Drama students recently enjoyed an exclusive backstage tour of her Majesty’s Theatre, facilitated by the Adelaide Festival Centre.

The Stage Management and Technical Tour was presented by State Opera South Australia (SOSA) and provided a behind-the-scenes window into the current production of Macbeth, a Grand Opera by Giuseppe Verdi.

Students had the unique opportunity to observe production teams working in real time in this historic and beautiful theatre, whilst simultaneously exploring their own potential future career prospects within this exciting industry; not a bad way to spend a morning!

"The redeveloped theatre is truly a grand sight to behold and really needs to be seen in person to be appreciated"

— Douglas Gautier - Adelaide Festival Centre CEO and Artistic Director
