AHS Forum

Mount Alvernia sent a group of Year 10 students to All Hallow’s School last week to participate in their Interschool Forum on the topic of eradicating human trafficking. The event, which included guest speakers from Blue Dragon Foundation and A21, focused on stories about how human trafficking is still an ongoing issue in our world.

The students came back with a greater knowledge and passion for this human rights issue and found great benefit in attending. They were able to share some of their findings at the whole school assembly this week. Well done to Amaeh, Yashvi, Lizzie, Emmy, Annabel, Hannah, Emily and Lara for engaging in this complex and challenging topic. Thank you to Ms Arenas for providing this opportunity to Mount Alvernia students and attending with the students.

AMC Maths Competition

Last week, eight of our Year 7 & 8 students participated in the Australian Maths Competition Junior Division. These students were selected by their teachers for further extension of their problem-solving skills in mathematics. The afternoon, supervised by one of our experienced mathematics teachers, Ms Colleen Goodin, was challenging and rewarding. Ms Goodin was impressed by the intensity of the student’s application on difficult and lengthy problems and their ability to persevere to the very end of the 70 minute competitionCongratulations to Hannah, Piper and Pia from Year 8 and Tahlia, Beth, Marianne and Milly from Year 7!

News from DigiClub

Mr Alex Bush - Digital Technology Teacher & DigiClub Coordinator

This year two Year 7 students, Ella and Milly, made a game for the Australian STEM Video Game challenge. The theme for 2023 is “Construction and Destruction”. Their game, “LadyBug Party” was designed, drawn, created and programmed exclusively by them. The hero, LadyBug, is trying to escape her cage and make her way to the LadyBug Party! Lucky for her, there is a friendly cat helping her along the journey, giving advice and providing potions that give LadyBug the strength to break down doors. All LadyBug has to do for the cat is make a tin of Tuna casserole!

The students used the game platform GDevelop, the same platform used in Year 7 Digital Technology class, to build the game. We wish the team well as they move into Stage 2 Judging for their game. Digi-Club is held every Thursday in Break 1 in F006, where students are working on a range of digital projects, including games, animation, video production and robotics. Anyone can join Digi-Club, you just need to turn up!
