Feast of Saint Clare of Assisi

Today, Friday 11 August, we celebrate the Feast of Saint Clare of Assisi. She is a woman of deep faith, conviction and compassion who heard the echo of her own voice in the preaching of Saint Francis. Inspired by him, Clare shone her light for others through her service to the poor and within her own religious community of women that she established. Saint Clare is one of the College’s patrons. Here at Mount Alvernia, students in Year 8 and Year 9 are part of the Clare School. Drawing their inspiration from the words and actions of Francis and Clare, they are encouraged to leave the ‘walls of the city,’ to go deeper into their learning, and to broaden their relationships with others. They are challenged to imitate God by shining their unique light, not only for themselves, but for others.

Earlier this year, students in Clare School gathered to reflect on the story of Saint Clare by studying her tavola. We noted in her story how radical was her call to religious life; how courageous was her decision to leave the comforts of her wealthy family life to embrace poverty; how inspiring was her life-long persistence to have her Rule approved by the Church; how loving she was of her friend Francis and the women who joined her community. At that assembly, students in Clare School were challenged to leave the ‘walls of the city,’ to go deeper into their learning, and to broaden their relationships with others.

They then wrote down one way that they would commit to responding to this challenge. Broadly, their commitments related to: their behaviour and engagement in class; study habits; academic improvement; being involved in activities the College has to offer; having courage; not judging others; being more respectful, kind and inclusive; serving the community; and making time to pray. In striving to follow in the footsteps of Saint Clare, I think our Clare School students have shown us how Clare can continue to inspire each of us at Mount Alvernia, to be better versions of ourselves. So, as we celebrate the Feast of Saint Clare of Assisi, let us consider how Clare’s example can challenge us. What do you need to change at this moment to be more radical, more courageous, more inspiring and more loving?

Sleepout

Last Thursday 3 August, ninety-eight students from Years 10 - 12 participated in the College’s annual School Sleepout. The Vinnies Youth Team facilitated a number of activities that deepened students’ understanding of homelessness and its causes. Representatives from the Kedron Conference of St Vincent de Paul, joined us for a panel discussion about the work of Vinnies in the local area and some of the challenges facing individuals and families at this time. I extend my thanks to the students for their participation and to so many College staff who contributed to the event through their organisation, supervision, food preparation, etc. Such events would not be possible without the support of such committed staff.

Donut Day

During Break 1 next Thursday 17 August, the Outreach Committee will host its annual Krispy Kreme Donut Day. They will be selling Original glazed donuts for $3 and Iced donuts for $3.50. Only cash payments will be accepted.

Encounter Youth

Encounter Youth is a faith-based youth group for secondary school students. Students meet from 6.30 – 8.30pm every Thursday at Little Flower Parish Hall, Turner Road, Kedron.
