Stage 5 Kuta-Kaya students attended a day excursion to Fort Scratchley in Newcastle. This site study excursion aligns with our unit of study, World War II, being taught during Term 3. Fort Scratchley holds a military significance, as having returned fire during a Japanese shelling of Newcastle on the 8th of June, 1942. Students were able to engage with military artefacts and walk through tunnels to look out over Newcastle and Stockton on a beautiful sunny day. We concluded our day watching the daily loading and firing of the gun at 1pm!
Our faculty enjoyed an excursion to the Hunter Valley Wildlife Park, as part of our Science and Community Access subjects, with students from all classes in attendance. We roamed throughout the park, investigating animal habitat and listened to guided information sessions on koalas and lions, then had our picnic lunch. We saw monkeys, lemurs, camels, alligators, birds, giraffes, zebras, roaming peacocks and by far, the most popular were the meerkats. The students then purchased food to feed the kangaroos. A wonderful day was had by all.
100% success rate! That was the outcome of a three-day course undertaken by Kuta-kaya students, as they studied to obtain their Learner Driver Permits. The final day included a trip to Service NSW at Cessnock to take the test. The fully funded course provided an opportunity for the students to achieve an important milestone. Well done!
