Relieving Deputy Principal's Report
Mrs Alice Wigny
Hi from Mrs Wigny,
As we approach the mid-point of Term 3, I am thrilled to share some remarkable achievements and events that have taken place within our school community. Congratulations to our Tournament of Minds Team, led by Ms Higgins who have made it through to the state final, our Spelling Bee finalists who represented our school with pride in the Spelling bee and our Debaters who achieved great success in the Premiers Debating Challenge.
Parents of children from Kindergarten to Year 12 must ensure their children attend school every day. On occasion, your child may need to be absent from school. Justified reasons for student absences may include:
Parents must provide an explanation for absences to the school within 7 days from the first day of any period of absence. Where an explanation has not been received within the 7-day timeframe, the school will record the absence as unjustified on the student's record. We thank our families who provide a timely response when their child is absent from school.
This is a reminder that if a student will be absent from school for any length of time (other than sick), an Extended Leave Application Form needs to be completed and approved by the Principal. Please contact the front office for one of the forms.
Congratulations to Charlotte B in Year 3 and Brock W in Year 5 for representing Oak Flats Public School at the Junior and Senior semi-finals of the Premiers Spelling Bee. Both students, who are excellent spellers, were required to spell some difficult words and were up against a large number of other students from across the state. Charlotte and Brock both displayed exceptional effort and resilience in a tough, and at times, nerve wracking competition. We are all extremely proud of you both!
In Week 8, Year 6 will be completing the Check-in assessments in reading, numeracy and writing. The assessments are mapped to the NSW Syllabus and National Literacy and Numeracy Progressions. They are designed to support school practices in identifying how students are performing in literacy and numeracy to help teachers tailor their teaching more specifically to student needs. All students in Year 6 across the state will be participating in the Check-in assessments.
From Weeks 7 to 10 there will be several opportunities for our Stage 3 students to participate in our transition to high school program. Year 5 students will attend Oak Flats High School in Weeks 7 and 8 of Term 3 and our Year 6 students in Weeks 9 and 10. They will have the opportunity to experience courses offered in high school, such as agriculture and cooking classes. Even if students aren't attending Oak Flats High School in 2024 or 2025, it is still a wonderful opportunity for our children.
Please ensure that your child wears a school jacket. Students have been reminded about the importance of wearing full school uniform as it is a part of our student welfare policy. I understand that jumpers can go missing so please ensure that you put your child's name on their jumper and remember our lost property is located outside the Staffroom.
Have a great fortnight!
Mrs Wigny
