Learning music

A perspective from a Year 12 student. Presented at the Winter Concert

My name is Amelia and I am the Performing Arts Captain for 2023. I would like to share some of the highlights of my time as a music student at MGSC. One thing I have loved hearing this year is the sound of the Year 7 band in the music rooms with instrument cases lining the hallway and all the young musicians eager to start playing. I love being able to hear the Year 7 band from a Year 12 perspective and remembering when I was in Year 7 and just starting in the music program.

Our two band form classes were excited to start playing. I can assure you that when you put a bunch of Year 7s who have only just learnt how to make a sound on a new instrument in a room together the result is not pleasing to the ears but we worked hard over the two years we were together and had some incredible performances and we were the first MGSC Year 8 band to win a gold award at the Victorian Schools Music Festival (which the symphonic band and current Year 8 band will be performing at in a few weeks)

Over my time in this music program I have made so many friendships that begun purely for our love of music and overtime have expanded to become what I know will be lifelong friendships. I am so grateful for that because when I was at the end of Year 6 and my mum was on a phone call with the school asking me if I wanted to be in a band form and me replying yes, no, yes I had no idea how much that final yes would change my life.

Being able to be part of the music program at this school has given me so much over the last six years and I am so unbelievably thankful for all the teachers and students who have been there with me during these years especially the year 12s here tonight’s who have continued on with music here since our very first music lessons, back when I thought that you hold a flute like a recorder.

When we were all originally introduced to the music program here at MGSC I remember one of the main selling points being that music makes you smarter and by looking at my maths results from Year 7 to now that point would be proved correct but I don't think that we ever considered how smart you have to be to want to do music in the first place.

I am so happy that this year I have been given the opportunity as performing arts captain to make a difference in the MGSC music program so that I can return the favour for the difference music and all the people within the music program have made in my life.
