Road safety
Rain, hail, or shine, our valued crossing supervisors, Liz and Des, are there to ensure our students are able to safely cross Balcombe Road before and after school. Unfortunately, we have had increasing reports of students running across Charman Road and Balcombe Road between the two crossings – particularly those students rushing to catch the 825 bus.
Last month, a student was seriously injured at a local school when they were struck by a car while attempting to cross Beach Road. This unfortunate and very serious incident is a timely reminder to have conversations with your child about road safety.
When students are travelling to or from school, they should be crossing roads at the pedestrian crossings. Furthermore, we ask students to stand well back from the road and to wait until the traffic has come to a full stop before stepping off the curb.
We fully understand the desire to get on the bus at the end of the day and the inconvenience of having to wait 20 minutes for the next one, but under no circumstances should students be running across a road between pedestrian crossings. Parents/carers who are picking up students from the other side of Charman Road are asked to tell your child to cross at the corner of Balcombe and Charman, rather than across Charman Road in front of oncoming traffic.
We understand it will take your child a little longer to get in the car, but this, or your child needing to wait for the next bus, pales in comparison to the prospect of them being seriously injured, or worse, when colliding with a vehicle. We thank families I advance for your support in having these important conversations with your child.
