SurfAid - Rhylee Duell 9A

https://makeawave.co/rhylee-duell

This September I am surfing every day for the month to raise funds for SurfAid. When you support my fundraising you give people in remote communities connected to us through surfing a hand-up, rather than a handout. SurfAid's geographical focus is on the heartlands of surfing where few visitors but surfers go, making their work unique. They specialise in working in very isolated villages where the maternal and child mortality rates are some of the highest in the world. With your support, we can give families the best chance of getting ahead by providing access to healthcare, clean water and sanitation and improved nutrition. Anything you can donate to support my efforts is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your help.

Cactus at La Mama Theatre - Mrs. Laura Muranty

Students in Year 11 & 12 VCE Theatre Studies visited the iconic La Mama Theatre to see the play, Cactus. The nostalgic home to Melbourne’s grassroots theatre culture proved to be an inspiring and engaging experience. Students were wowed by the cutting-edge play about two teenage girls coming of age and how their friendship helped them overcome complex life challenges.

The following analytical comments were made by the students.

“The director successfully interpreted a play that focussed on a true portrayal of adolescent experiences.”

Lachlan Denbrok

“Through the Theatre Composition of Cohesion, the use of dynamic lighting and sound emphasised key moments in the play, such as when the character Abbey was acting out her surgery through non-verbal acting skills.”

Grace Burns

“The inter-relationship between director, actor, and design helped transform the play to authentically represent a teenage girls world.”

Aimee Le Paige

“Fran Sweeny-Nash, who played the character PB, used a rapid-fire quick delivery of lines to create a comedic effect and engage the audience.”

Community Theatre Success for our Students - Mrs. Laura Muranty

Year 12 student Analise Mesch made her debut community theatre performance last weekend at The Foster One Act Play Festival. As a representative for Wonthaggi Theatrical Group (WTG), she wowed audiences as the ditsy girl in How to Survive a Zombie Apocalypse. The performance successfully won the awards of Best Play, Best Director, Best Lead Actor, and Best Supporting Actress.

The hit show can now be seen as part of Fearless Fringe, alongside Leongatha Lyric Theatre’s youth production, After the Party, written and directed by Mary Mackillop’s Theatre Studies teacher, Laura Muranty. The production crew are also Mary Mackillop students. Taine Lowe as Assistant Director, Tayla Atyeo-Peters as stage Manager and Coby Fowles as Sound Technician. The play explores the lives of seven teenagers navigating their way through adolescence and all the complexities it presents. The play is targeted for young and old and depicts an authentic insight into teen friendships and parental relationships.

Both plays will be performed in the September school holidays as part of Fearless Fringe. Tickets are only $20 and $25 and the event is held at the State Coal Mine in Wonthaggi. See the poster for details and support our youth.
