On Friday 4 August, about 45 of our Years 3-6 students headed to Wollongong to compete in the South Coast Zone's Primary Athletics Carnival.
Beautiful weather greeted us upon arrival as we got settled. Mrs Giddings was kept busy most of the day, selling zone merchandise, whilst Mr Parker managed our team from the grandstand. Students cheered and applauded one another near the finish line, as the races and field events got underway. Fueled by bacon and egg rolls and other yummy treats from the canteen our team members gave their best efforts to all their events.
After a brief break for lunch it was time for the 1500m races, closely followed by the 4x100m relays. These events are always full of excitement and drama. Toby G entered just about every event he could, amassing an incredible 49 points, which saw him finish in second place for his age group. Amelia P competed in 7 events, enjoying her day's competition.
Other special mentions to Toby, Sophie, Jett, Amelia, Mia, Will and one or two others who replaced team members in a variety of events if they were absent or had to leave early. Three schools were battling it out all day for 3rd place often with only a few points between them. IN the end, NCS finished the day with 322 points, in 4th place overall, which was only 7 points behind the 3rd place team.
Congratulations everyone for your efforts! The following students finished in 1st-3rd positions in track events or 1st-2nd in field events and have qualified for the CSSA Primary State Athletics event on Friday 1 September at Homebush: Alex N, Tianna K, Toby G, Liam C, Xavier S, Shakaya N, Amelia P, Kim C and Jack B. Very well done indeed!
"We went to CSSA Zone Basketball and in my perspective we smashed! We versed ICS, Cedars, Calderwood and Southern Highlands. Overall the Jnr Girls came a solid 2nd." - Tayla (Jnr Girls)
"It was fun" - Dan (Jnr Boys)
"We won 2 out of 4 games, however we only lost by 2 and 4 points. All of us put in a really good effort and played really well. It was a fun day" - Kent (Jnr Boys)
"Myles was a weapon coming in last minute to help us out so we could actually have a sub. They all played very well. Full credit to the boys" - Dylan (Opens Boys)
"We worked really well as a team and had some intense matches against really good schools. Suffered some losses and had a win" - Kayla (Opens Girls)
We would also like to recognise the valuable roles played by Cody, Matt and Darcy within the Opens Boys team in the lead up to this event. Regrettably, these three students were unable to participate in the Gala Day due to illness and we pray for a speedy recovery for these guys.

On Thursday 3 August, 55 Secondary students went to the CSSA South Coast Zone Secondary Athletics Carnival at Beaton Park, Wollongong.
It was a great day of participation, spirit, teamwork and athletic prowess with 26 students qualifying through to State later this month. There was almost an NCS student in every event which helped us finish the team rankings in 3rd place. Many students broke records and everyone had a great day.
Thankfully no one got seriously injured but we did get back to school over an hour late! The surf was pumping at Kiama and everyone wished they could have been out in the surf instead of in the smelly bus.
Thanks to all the organisers and teachers who helped. A big thank you also goes to our wonderful parents and carers who came to support us. A special mention to Mr & Mrs McLaren who assisted with officiating and photography on the day.
Record breakers:
Well done to Emily McL (15 Girls) and Caitlin S (18 Girls) who were awarded overall Age Champions for their performances at the Carnival.
Last Friday, we celebrated NAIDOC Week with a special K-12 Assembly.
Pastor Brendon Garlett from Shoalhaven Aboriginal Community Church (ShACC) shared a message with us and we were also privileged to have dancers from St John's The Evangelist High School perform at the assembly. Many NCS students were also involved including the Secondary Vocal Ensemble.
A big thank you to Mrs Stewart for organising the morning and to Stage 5 Food Technology for cooking, presenting and serving some of the delicious morning tea and to Mrs Varga for her creative cookies.
Thank you to all the other staff who contributed, to the students for their eager involvement and to the parents and carers who attended. It was a wonderful assembly.
Some feedback from an audience member:
'I have been to a lot of celebrations for NAIDOC week but seriously your assembly this week was the best ever.
