School for Student Leadership

Year 9

On Thursday and Friday of last week, it was my absolute pleasure to travel to Marlo to see and hear about the experiences of our three Year 9 students, Austin, Isla and Renarto, who have been attending the Snowy River Student Leadership Camp for the past 10 weeks.

They spoke strongly about their leadership journey and the opportunities that have been afforded to them through the program, including

  • developing confidence in public speaking,
  • the ability to work in and lead teams,
  • plan events, and
  • contribute to the running and day to day operations of the camp.

One of the key activities they undertook was to develop a Community Project that will support and give back to our school community. They chose to launch a 'walk/ride to school' event, their motto being Keep Clean - Let's Go Green, which they aim to promote and run in Term 4.

In addition, they were fortunate to undertake overnight hikes, canoeing, surfing and SUP activities as well as community experiences in, and around, Marlo.

All students identified that they have developed future, lifelong friendships from their time there, and recognised the value of the experience and what it would mean upon their return to the College in continuing to support Student Leadership and giving an active voice to Wantirna Students.

They had nothing but praise for the staff that worked with them and supported them during their stay and would certainly advocate for any Year 8 students considering this for next year to give it a go, as you certainly grow!
