Welcome to the Term 4 LOTE program update

Our students have worked productively in LOTE sessions to enhance their Chinese language knowledge and skills. As open-minded learners, they further explored the cultural differences between Australia and China to achieve a better understanding inside.

Prep: Western Food in Chinese 西式食物

This term, Prep students inquired about 'Western Food' in Chinese and learned how to name some common Western foods, such as salad 沙拉 shā lā and chocolate 巧克力 qiǎo kè lì. Being creative thinkers, they showed great enthusiasm when making the hamburger craft and labelling it in Chinese (hàn bǎo bāo 汉堡包). In addition, they also grew in their confidence when singing the food song in Chinese.

Year 3: Emotions in Chinese 情绪/心情

Emotions is the focused unit of inquiry for Year 3 students in Term 4, and its purpose is to increase our students' social and emotional well-being. For the tune-in activity, they had an opportunity to guess the emotions from 16 different facial expressions through a gallery walk. Then, Year 3 learners would use the visible thinking routine 'I see (我看见 wǒ kàn jiàn) - I think (我想 wǒ xiǎng) -I wonder (我好奇 wǒ hào qí) to verbally share with the class about their findings. Their most significant highlight of this week would be practising the focused vocabulary of emotions (e.g. Tired lèi 累 and Excited xīng fèn 兴奋) with some hand gestures as a whole class.

Year 6: School Life in China 学校生活

When exploring school life in China during Term 4, Year 6 students begin to understand the similarities and differences between the school routine and the school timetable of typical Chinese students compared to their prior knowledge of an Australian school. In recent weeks, they have been immersed in two different school subjects (Maths 数学 shù xué and Music 音乐 yīn yuè). After reviewing the numbers in Chinese with them, Year 6 learners used the Chinese dice for the first time to play the count 24 game (算24点) in pairs. This game has not only developed their numeracy skills in Chinese, but also motivated them to learn Maths in a different language. As balanced learners, they also showcased their potential talents by performing a Chinese pop dance -Subject 3 科目三 in class.

Well done to all the Prep to Year 6 students at DPS who continuously strive to achieve their best in Chinese during Term 4. Let's celebrate their personal success and keep cultivating their international-mindedness in learning Chinese.
