Messages from our Specialist team (P.E., Art, Music and Mandarin) and Library...
Over the past two weeks, our Prep students have been reviewing what they’ve learned in the first three terms, including greetings, numbers, and body parts. The students had a lot of fun revisiting these topics through interactive activities like playing with Mr and Mrs Potato Head. This week, we’ve started learning about colours! The students have been singing and dancing along to our catchy colours song. So far, we’ve focused on learning how to say 'red' and 'yellow' in Mandarin, and they’re already doing a fantastic job.
After being away in Week 1, I was thrilled to catch up with the students and hear all about their school holidays. Their enthusiasm was contagious as they shared the fantastic experiences they had! For the rest of the session, the Year 1 and 2 students drew pictures depicting their adventures. Some created detailed illustrations of a special event, while others filled their pages with a variety of smaller drawings of different activities they did. Whether they relaxed at home or travelled overseas, each story was unique. I truly enjoy these lessons, as they allow me to get to know each student a little better while hearing about the fun they had!
In the Years 3 and 4 Music Program we have been exploring our Music From Around the World unit of work. We have learnt a tuned (marimba) and untuned (djembe and maraca) arrangement of the Mexican fold song, “La Bamaba”. Students have learnt the parts for each instrument over the past two lessons and have now started to layer them to form as class piece.
We look forward to exploring music from other parts of the world over the coming weeks.
The Year 3 and 4 students have begun Term 2 by learning about the Performing Arts topic, Drama. The main focus these last two weeks have been understanding 'what' Drama is and important roles each person can partake in. Students have been developing their acting skills by learning about various techniques, such as: mime, monologues and improvisation. We will continue to develop these skills over the next few weeks. By the end of term, students will have a stronger understanding of these skills and have the confidence to create a performance of their own and perform in front of the class.
Our Year 5 and 6 students have been practising dodgeball at the start of this Term. First they learnt the traditional rules and then had the chance to create new rules and trial them out. Year 5 and 6 will then be practising volleyball later this year in preparation for their final gala day of 2024 at South Melbourne Beach.
