Celebrating the growth in our wonderful children on each learning level...
We are so impressed with the way the Preps have come back to school after the holidays. Level 5 is filled with incredible, focussed learners! The Preps are eager for challenges and keen to show their best work. This week, they have learnt how to add more detail to their sentences to make them interesting. They have done a fantastic job including a who, what, where and when!
During the in-visit from TaskWorks, our Year One students explored how simple machines are used in everyday life. They learned about springs, levers, gears, wheels, screws and inclined planes. The children looked at life-size equipment and saw simple machines in action. They learned about the history and development of simple machines and how they are used to make our lives easier.
In Year 2, students were enthralled by the creativity and enthusiasm of Bernard Caleo's author in-visit. He shared a storytelling technique called Kamishibai meaning 'Paper Story'. The stories included a mystery egg, treats and stories, a dog called Split Dog and a man with runaway teeth! During the session, our students had the opportunity to draw using the element of suspense. On one side of the page was someone or something that was surprised. On the other side was the thing that was surprising. It was a pleasure having Bernard visit SMPS. We hope our students will use this visit as inspiration for the stories they will be writing in English!
In Year 3, we have started the final term off by focusing on our collaboration skills and how to be an effective team member. Students worked in groups to solve a puzzle and create the longest paper chain. They demonstrated the ability to reflect on their teamwork skills, listen to the views of others and play an active role in achieving their group goal. We have been impressed by how they have taken their learning and applied it to situations throughout the school day.
It has been a busy start to Term 4 and the Year 4 students have settled back in with ease. They have been particularly excited to start our new class novel 'The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe' and have already formed many theories about the wonderous land of Narnia!
In Science, we have started learning about heat energy. Last week we learnt about primary and secondary heat sources. Have you ever wondered what kind of heat source a hot water bottle is? Why not ask your child!
In Year 5 students have settled back into Term 4 with ease. They returned to school with smiles on their faces and lots of stories to share from their break. We have started our new class novel 'The Girl of Ink and Stars'. This follows Isabella on an adventurous trip to the forbidden territories on Gromera Island.
In Science, we have been learning about the solar system. This week, we dived into identifying terrestrial, giant and ice planets. In addition to this, we identified the gravity on the different planets in our solar system. Check out some of the student's diagrams below.
The Year 6 cohort have returned to school full of enthusiasm for their final term in Primary School. We are so impressed with their engagement during lessons and for consistently maintaining a growth mindset. This is particularly evident during our English lessons. We have started our final class novel, ‘The Book of Chance’. The Book of Chance includes themes of social media, family, and trust, which are relevant for the student’s personal growth as they prepare for high school.
