Principal's Report

 - Tania Sorbello

As we near the end of term, and as we edge ever nearer to the final handover of the building project, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our community for their continued support of myself, our staff, our students and each other.

But, whilst we wait in anticipation of the build handover, you may have noticed that, this week, The Block has had a makeover with new turf being laid. I’m sure you will agree that the space looks amazing! We now need a few weeks without traffic to allow the grass to take off before we begin utilising the space again.

An extra special thank you to Lincoln Gray and the BESI team for coordinating this project, which was funded by all of our wonderful families through their financial contributions to the school throughout the year.

Student Led Gender Equality Project

As many of you would have seen at this afternoon’s Assembly, 2024 has seen the Year 6 students of Fitzroy North Primary School take part in the Student Led Gender Equality Pilot Project. The Project was led by Women’s Health in the North and supported by the Department of Education Respectful Relationships team, the Neighbourhood Justice Centre, coHealth and Banksia Gardens Community Services.

The Project developed a Theory of Change based around the overall assumption that “Young people can be effective agents of change, through capacity building and co-design projects”, and aimed to create classroom communities which are gender equitable, safe and respectful

Over Terms One and Two, our Year 6 students participated in a series of workshops around Gender Stereotypes, Gender Equity, Youth Leadership and Advocacy, Healthy Relationships and Consent and Project Planning and Design. This term, the children have decided on group actions and projects and have been supported by school staff and the project working group to see their projects come to fruition.

From student information workshops, to sports days, a picture story book and a video production, our Year 6 students have demonstrated their understanding of gender equality and shared their new learnings with students right across the school with finesse. Next term, we will see our Year 6 group pass the baton to their Year 5 peers, to continue shining a light on gender equality and advocacy.

In the coming weeks, families will be provided with opportunities to purchase the children’s story book and view the wonderful video project. We are so incredibly proud of all of our students for their work on this project and would also like to thank all of our external partners who have supported the process. To Brad, Hannah and Kathy, thank you for leading the Year 6 group through this process with enthusiasm, knowledge and sensitivity – the children were all very fortunate to have such a wonderful and supportive teaching team in their corner!

Divisional Athletics Carnival

A huge congratulations to the twelve students who have progressed to the Regional level following this week’s Divisional Athletics Carnival. All of the FNPS students represented our school with pride and embodied our school values of Kindness, Resilience and Respect. We are so proud of each and every one of you for your outstanding efforts!

Whole School Learning Exhibition

A reminder that next Wednesday, 18th September from 3:00pm – 3:30pm, we will hold our whole school Learning Exhibition to celebrate the wonderful learning our students have undertaken throughout this term. Centred around the Primary Years Programme theme “How the World Works”, the children have been busily working to prepare and present their learning to the community and they simply can’t wait to share their wonderful achievements!

Hats in the Yard

A reminder that, with Spring upon us, the time has come for students to begin wearing hats. In line with the FNPS SunSmart Policy, children are required to wear their hats when playing outside. Hats are available for purchase at the front office if required.

Go gently,

Tania
