Learning Space News

Year 3/4

Term 2 in the Year 3/4 Learning Space has been jam-packed full of learning and fun.

Maths

The focus this term has been on multiplication, with students practising their multiplication facts regularly with games, quizzes and other activities. They have been pleased with their progress in learning their times tables and we are proud of their efforts. They have now moved onto learning all about division. Students have also explored chance and have conducted experiments to determine the likelihood of events happening.

Literacy

Students have been learning about the features of an information report. They have written their own reports, firstly on the theme of cultural celebrations and commemorations, and later about animals.  After writing about their chosen animal, they enjoyed making models of them out of plasticine.

Students all been reading a novel titled The Iron Man by Ted Hughes, which was first published in 1963.  This is a mysterious story about a strange giant made of iron who causes problems for local farmers because he eats all of their farming machinery!  The language in this book is rich and has provided lots of opportunities to expand our students’ vocabulary.  Students haven’t finished reading the book yet - they are excited to learn how the story will end.

National Simultaneous Storytime

Each year, the Australian Library and Information Association holds a National Simultaneous Storytime event throughout Australia.  A book by an Australian author and illustrator is chosen and read in schools, kindergartens, libraries and homes at the same time around the nation. This year the book chosen was Bowerbird Blues by Aura Parker, and it was read on 22 May at 12pm.

Year 3/4 students were lucky enough to have the Assistant Principal for Teaching and Learning, Mrs Harkness, read the book to them. Through the book, students discovered that while the bird was collecting blue treasures, he attracted something much greater and meaningful.

Multicultural Incursion

On 7th May, Year 3/4 students participated in a Multicultural Incursion facilitated by Cultural Infusion. The presenters were engaging and the activities were interactive and designed to align with this term’s Inquiry unit, ‘Community, Remembrance and Celebrations’.  Students enjoyed learning Bollywood dancing, as well as playing African and Chinese drums.

Swimming

Students have participated in swimming sessions and had lots of fun while also learning vital lessons about keeping safe in the water.
