HOLIDAY MATHS FUN!

As we saw in the last newsletter, maths is all around us! So why not incorporate maths into your holiday activities with the children?

BIG DAY OUT

Let the children plan a Big Day out around the local area or city. Give them a timeline and a budget and allow them to use timetables to organise transport and events. If they want to see a certain movie, can they use the timetable to work out what time it starts? How much will it cost and will there be change for popcorn!?

Teaching the children to use Google Maps to work out how long it takes to get somewhere or the PTV app to organise what time train they will get, is a great life skill, especially for those off to secondary school soon .

A TRIP TO THE LIBRARY

There are so many books that have a maths focus.  My favourites are  "One is a Snail, Ten is a Crab" and "365 Penguins".  Check out Pinterest for some great books that involve mathematics concepts.

PLAY GAMES

So many of the games we play with our children are already maths-based. Some great games are dominoes, UNO, Yahtzee, Battleships, Rummy and so many more.

Use outside activities as maths learning opportunities too. Shooting hoops - get your child to keep score; Kicking the footy - estimate how far you can kick it, or keep score of an AFL game (definitely puts our 6x tables to the test)!
