Immersive French and Chinese Language Experiences

Year 9 students of French and Chinese embarked on two exciting culinary excursions, blending language learning with cultural immersion. These excursions provided our students with unforgettable learning experiences while reinforcing their language skills in engaging and practical ways.

Last week, our Year 9 French class journeyed down to ‘French Basket’ in Dee Why, for an immersive experience to practise building our vocabulary and French skills. This was an incredible experience, as we got to interact with people from France and learn more about traditional cuisine as we conversed with the servers. I would highly recommend this experience for future classes, as it builds the students’ confidence in French speaking and allows them to practise pronunciation and learn more about the language.

The Year 9 Chinese class went to Hot Pot in Chatswood as an excursion from Form time to the end of Period 6, where we explored different customs and styles of cuisine. We were able to apply our language skills that we learnt in the classroom to real life, through ordering our own meals and communicating with the wait staff in Mandarin. After the Hot Pot we went to a Chinese Grocery store where we expanded our knowledge of fresh produce that we used throughout our Hot Pot experience. Overall, this is a highly recommended experience, the food was flavoursome and we took full advantage of an opportunity to learn more about Chinese culture and dialogue.
